A promising drill intercept is evidence of mineralization—not proof of a mine, a mineral resource, or economic value. To evaluate a mining company’s announcement, identify its reporting framework and project stage, check the data and responsible professional, distinguish resources from reserves, and examine the technical, economic, legal, environmental, and social factors that could affect development.
Start with the reporting framework and project stage
First establish which country, exchange, and disclosure rules apply. CRIRSCO’s International Reporting Template is a cross-code reference, while the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s rules apply to relevant U.S. registrants. Terminology and filing requirements can differ, so do not assume that a term or disclosure requirement means exactly the same thing in every jurisdiction.
Check the effective date of the estimate or study and look for later filings or announcements that may have changed it. CRIRSCO says companies should review and report exploration results, resources, and reserves at least annually and report material changes promptly.
Identify what the company has actually disclosed. These stages are not interchangeable:

Labels such as “project inventory” or “mine potential” can be less precise than these formal terms. Read the technical report and announcement to determine which formal stage the company is reporting.
Read drill results as evidence, not as a valuation
Do not judge a drill program solely by the highest-grade or longest intercept in a headline. Read the full results and geological context in the announcement or underlying technical report. For each intercept, check:
- Hole identification, location, orientation, and depth.
- Reported interval length and any discussion of true width. A down-hole interval is not automatically the true thickness of a mineralized zone.
- The geological interpretation and whether results appear consistent across multiple holes and areas.
- Sampling and analytical methods, sample recovery, laboratory quality controls, and the basis for interpreting results as representative.
- Whether the announcement discusses materially uncertain or inadequate data, including poor sample recovery or poor assay and laboratory repeatability.
A high grade or long interval may be encouraging, but its significance depends on the deposit’s geometry and continuity, the number and distribution of observations, deposit style, and assumptions such as cut-off grade and dilution. The reporting guidance does not establish a universal grade threshold that proves a discovery is economic.

Treat an exploration target as conceptual unless and until a suitably supported estimate is reported. CRIRSCO says exploration targets must not be presented in a way that misrepresents them as resources or reserves.
Check the resource category—and what it does not mean
Resource categories indicate increasing geological confidence:

These categories describe geological confidence, not a ranking of economic viability. A resource estimate is not simply the sum of mineralized drill intervals: it also depends on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. Do not treat inferred material as established economic inventory or as a reserve.

Verify the responsible professional and technical record
Find the Competent Person or Qualified Person identified in the disclosure. Check their name, relevant qualifications and experience, professional affiliation or licence, relationship to the issuer, sign-off, and the date of the report. Under CRIRSCO’s template, a Competent Person must have at least five years of relevant experience for the style of mineralization and activity being reported. The SEC guide describes a Qualified Person as having at least five years of relevant experience and membership or licensure in good standing with a recognized professional organization.
For SEC registrants, the SEC guide describes a dated and signed technical report summary requirement when resources or reserves are first disclosed or materially changed, with details depending on the filing. Consult the applicable filing rather than assuming the same requirement applies in other jurisdictions.

Test the project’s modifying factors
Geology is only one part of whether a deposit can become a mine. CRIRSCO identifies mining, metallurgical, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental considerations as modifying factors. SEC guidance also identifies infrastructure, compliance, and arrangements with local individuals or groups. The evidence needed—and the importance of each factor—depends on the mineral, location, project design, and development stage.
- Mining and geology: Assess deposit geometry and continuity, the proposed mining method, dilution, recovery losses, geotechnical conditions, and water management.
- Processing and metallurgy: Look for representative testwork, expected recovery, product quality, impurities, and evidence that the proposed process has been demonstrated at a suitable scale.
- Infrastructure: Check requirements for power, water, roads or rail, port access, workforce, and construction, including who is responsible for providing or paying for them.
- Economics and markets: Review capital and operating cost assumptions, commodity prices, product marketability, contracts or offtake terms, royalties, taxes, financing needs, and sensitivity analysis.
- Legal rights and tenure: Examine title, permits, claims, access rights, agreements, litigation, and other relevant obligations.
- Environmental and social matters: Consider baseline studies, impact and closure obligations, community agreements, consultation, resettlement risk, and unresolved conflicts.
- Government and execution: Review the permitting path, fiscal and regulatory context, schedule, construction capability, and political or security conditions.
A factor omitted or not quantified in a study is not necessarily immaterial. Look for evidence appropriate to the project’s stage rather than treating an unanswered question as proof that the risk is either negligible or insurmountable.

Check whether the scope of a study is appropriate for its label and whether its inputs are disclosed. Under SEC guidance, a pre-feasibility or feasibility study supporting reserve disclosure includes economic analysis, and the commodity price assumptions and reasons for selecting them must be disclosed. A feasibility study is more comprehensive than a pre-feasibility study.

Compare the base case with downside scenarios. Test what happens if commodity prices fall, capital or operating costs rise, recovery is lower, the schedule slips, exchange rates move, or financing is harder to obtain. Check whether the analysis includes required infrastructure and permitting, whether its timetable depends on approvals not yet secured, and whether the company has a credible route to fund the next development stage. These questions help identify exposure; there is no universal investment threshold that resolves them for every project.
For an SEC-defined initial assessment, the SEC guide says a Qualified Person may include—but is not required to include—a cash-flow analysis to demonstrate a project’s economic potential. Do not assume an initial assessment has the same analytical scope as a pre-feasibility or feasibility study.
Look for balanced disclosure and material changes
CRIRSCO says exploration-result reporting should provide enough information for a considered, balanced judgment and should not unreasonably imply that potentially economic mineralization has been discovered. Compare headline claims with the full announcement and technical report. Note whether the disclosure explains uncertainty, the limits of the data, and results that qualify or complicate the positive interpretation.
Track material changes in the estimate or project, including changes to costs, permits, ownership, or schedule. CRIRSCO says material information affecting economic value and changes to resources or reserves should be reported. A dated estimate and a later promotional summary may describe different assumptions or stages.

Compare projects on a like-for-like basis
When assessing more than one company or project, record the effective date of each estimate and compare the same kinds of evidence. A useful comparison includes:
- Reporting framework, report date, and project stage.
- Resource and reserve category mix, alongside geological evidence and data quality.
- Grade and geometry in the context of the deposit type, rather than as isolated headline numbers.
- Metallurgical recovery, product quality, proposed mining method, and infrastructure requirements.
- Capital and operating assumptions, commodity-price cases, and sensitivity results.
- Permits, tenure, environmental and social obligations, financing runway, and execution capability.
- Disclosure quality, including how clearly uncertainty and material changes are explained.
There is no single score that resolves these trade-offs. A comparison is only as useful as the underlying technical and project information, and a stronger result on one axis does not erase a weakness on another.
