Neither diesel nor gasoline is universally better for backup power. Choose based first on the loads you need to run, then compare specific generators by rated output, runtime at a comparable load, fuel access and storage, cost, portability, noise, maintenance, and connection requirements. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish a blanket fuel advantage in efficiency, price, durability, or runtime.
Start with the loads, not the fuel
List the appliances or equipment you expect to run during an outage and check each generator’s continuous (rated) output and surge capacity against those needs. A generator’s maximum or starting output is not a substitute for its continuous rating. Compare diesel and gasoline models with similar usable output, and look at their runtime at the load you actually expect to carry.
For backup at a home, also decide whether you need to power selected essentials or most of the house. Cummins distinguishes portable generators, which require manual setup and refueling, from permanently installed standby systems intended to support all or nearly all of a home. Automatic whole-home changeover is a separate standby-system decision, not simply a choice between diesel and gasoline. Cummins explains the differences between portable and standby generators.
What the available specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer figures are useful for narrowing down models, but they are not an independent, equivalent-load comparison between fuels. For example, Yanmar’s European-facing YDG diesel series spans 2–5.8 kVA prime power at 50 Hz, operating capacity of 5–10 hours, noise figures of 79–85 dB(A), and weights of 71–106 kg. Those are ranges across a family, not the specifications of one generator. Yanmar also lists 50/60 Hz capability and says only select models are Stage V certified for the EU market. Confirm the exact model, market, and certification before relying on any of those figures. See Yanmar’s YDG series specifications.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cummins’ portable lineup includes gasoline and gasoline/propane examples, with runtime stated by model and load. Runtime figures are meaningful only alongside those conditions: comparing one model’s runtime at 25% load with another’s figure at a different load does not establish which fuel lasts longer. Review Cummins’ portable generator models.
Compare the specific models on these points
- Output: Rated and surge watts or kVA, and whether the generator can support your planned loads together.
- Runtime and refueling: Runtime at a stated, comparable load, tank capacity, and how often you would need to refuel.
- Fuel access and storage: Which fuel you can obtain during a disruption and how you can store it safely in your location.
- Cost: Purchase price and local fuel costs for the models and region you are considering. The available evidence does not establish which fuel will cost less to operate.
- Deployment: Unit weight, portability, starting method, and any cold-weather requirements in the manual.
- Noise and upkeep: Noise measurements with distance and load conditions stated, service intervals, and access to parts. A bare dB(A) figure does not make two models directly comparable if measurement conditions differ.
- Connection and safety features: Required cords, inlet, transfer equipment, or professional installation; emissions certification for the relevant market; and whether the model has a carbon-monoxide (CO) shutoff feature.
Fuel alone cannot settle these trade-offs. Availability, local fuel prices, model availability, and installation requirements vary by location, while the cited manufacturer pages describe their own products rather than provide a controlled comparison.

Portable-generator safety is the same priority with either fuel
Portable fuel-burning generators can produce deadly CO. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to operate a portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, with exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings’ entrances. Never run one in a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, porch, or carport. Opening doors or windows does not make indoor operation safe. Follow the generator’s instructions and warnings, maintain it, and follow the manufacturer’s electrical-shock precautions in wet weather. CPSC’s February 19, 2026 safety release reiterates the placement guidance.
CPSC’s August 4, 2022 release reported an average of about 85 U.S. consumer deaths per year from CO poisoning caused by gasoline-powered portable generators during 2017–2019; it also said 81% of generator deaths in its fatal-incident study occurred in residential locations. Those figures are tied to the stated reporting periods and should not be read as current-year counts. Read the CPSC release and its safety guidance.

Use CO alarms as a second layer
CPSC recommends battery-operated CO alarms, or alarms with battery backup, on each level of the home and outside sleeping areas. A generator’s CO shutoff feature is also worth checking, but it does not replace outdoor placement or alarms. CPSC estimated that the voluntary standards PGMA G300-2018 and UL 2201 could reduce generator CO deaths by 87% and 100%, respectively; those are the agency’s estimates associated with the standards, not a claim that every generator complies or that shutoff makes indoor use safe. CPSC discusses CO shutoff features and the standards.

A portable unit requires someone to move it to a safe operating location, fuel and start it, connect loads, and refuel it during a prolonged outage. Afterward, it must be put away. If that manual process is not practical—or if you need automatic changeover—consider a permanently installed standby system and its installation requirements rather than treating portability as a fuel difference. Any inlet, transfer equipment, or connection must be suitable for both the generator and the premises; confirm compatibility and applicable requirements rather than assuming a generic part will work.
