Eclipse Che and Eclipse Theia are not direct substitutes for one another: Che manages container-based developer workspaces on Kubernetes or OpenShift, while Theia is a platform for building customized browser- or desktop-based IDEs and tools.
Is AWS Cloud9 still available?
Not to new customers. AWS says existing customers can continue using Cloud9, and its documentation history records the change on July 25, 2024. If you already have a Cloud9 environment, the decision is whether it still meets your needs and whether to keep that workflow. If you are starting from scratch, compare Che and Theia according to the kind of platform you need rather than treating Cloud9 as a signup option. AWS Cloud9 User Guide history
What are Cloud9, Che, and Theia?
| Product | What it is | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Cloud9 | AWS browser-accessed IDE with code editing, language support, runtime debuggers, and an integrated terminal. | An existing AWS Cloud9 workflow connected to an EC2 instance or other compute, if your account is eligible. |
| Eclipse Che | A Kubernetes-native cloud development environment platform. It provisions container-based workspaces described by devfiles and runs them as Kubernetes or OpenShift workloads. | Teams that want managed, reproducible workspaces and can operate the underlying cluster. |
| Eclipse Theia | A framework for building development tools and IDEs using web technologies. | Organizations or developers building a customized IDE or tool for browser or desktop use. |
Cloud9, Che, and Theia therefore represent different product scopes: an AWS IDE service, a Kubernetes workspace platform, and an IDE-building framework. Eclipse Che describes itself as a Kubernetes-native platform for cloud development environments in its official documentation. Theia’s stated project goal is to provide a platform for developing tools and IDEs, as described in its project goals.
What Eclipse Che adds for team workspaces
Che is designed to provision and manage cloud development environments as containerized workloads. A workspace is defined with a devfile, which describes its development tools and runtime components. Che’s architecture combines its server components, the DevWorkspace Operator, and user workspaces. The operator creates and controls Kubernetes resources; user IDEs run remotely in Kubernetes Pods and are accessed through a browser.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This model can make development environments more consistent across a team, but it makes Kubernetes or OpenShift operations part of the deployment decision. Teams need to plan for cluster setup and administration as well as workspace definitions, identity, and access rules. Che documents OIDC authentication and Kubernetes RBAC authorization; these are deployment controls to assess, not proof of a comparative security ranking.
Is Eclipse Theia a complete IDE or a framework?
Theia is best understood as a framework for building IDEs and developer tools, not as a ready-made hosted workspace service with Che’s cluster-management model. A product built on Theia can run as a desktop application or in a browser, with its backend running locally or remotely. In the architecture described by the project, frontend and backend processes communicate through JSON-RPC over WebSockets or REST over HTTP.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This flexibility suits teams that need to shape the editor and tool experience around their product or workflow. It also means you must decide what to build and how to provide its backend and development environment; choosing Theia alone does not imply that a team workspace service has been deployed. The project’s architecture documentation describes the model and was last updated December 28, 2023, so treat it as an architectural description rather than a guarantee about every current release.
Which should you choose?
- Already using Cloud9: Consider keeping it if your account remains eligible and the existing environment meets your needs. AWS states that current customers may continue using the service.
- Need reproducible team environments on Kubernetes or OpenShift: Evaluate Che. Its devfile-based container workspaces and Kubernetes resource management match that goal, provided your organization can support the cluster.
- Need a branded or highly customized IDE or tool: Evaluate Theia. It is intended as a foundation for building tools and IDEs, with browser or desktop and local or remote configurations.
- Want a simple new hosted-IDE signup: These products do not support a blanket recommendation. Cloud9 is closed to new customers, and Che and Theia require choices about deployment and product scope.
What to compare before committing
Where code and runtime live
Cloud9 environments can use a newly created EC2 instance or connect to existing compute or a server; project files may live there or be cloned from a remote repository. Che runs workspaces as Kubernetes or OpenShift workloads. Theia allows a product’s backend to run locally or remotely. Decide where source code, development tools, and runtime processes should reside, then evaluate each deployment against that requirement.

Operations and customization
Che’s workspace management depends on Kubernetes or OpenShift resources and their administration. Theia offers a foundation for custom IDEs, so the work includes assembling and operating the desired product experience. Cloud9 bundles an IDE with an AWS environment, but it is not available for new customers. The right fit depends on whether your team would rather operate workspaces, build an IDE, or retain an existing service workflow.
Access control
Che’s documentation describes OIDC authentication and Kubernetes RBAC authorization. For a meaningful security decision, review the actual deployment, identity configuration, cluster permissions, and organizational policies. The available product documentation does not establish an audited, like-for-like security ranking across all three.

Cost, speed, and ease
The official pages cited here do not provide comparable pricing, performance benchmarks, or an ease-of-use ranking. Costs depend on the infrastructure and operational model you deploy; performance depends on comparable configurations that are not evaluated here. Estimate costs for your own compute, cluster, and maintenance requirements, and assess onboarding against your team’s existing infrastructure skills rather than assuming one product is cheapest, fastest, or easiest.
