Toshiba 50UL3B63DG: At First Glance

Toshiba has been making televisions for a really long time, and they have quite a number of loyal fans. This is because this multi-million-dollar brand excels at making low-cost televisions that offer brilliant performance.

The Toshiba 50UL3B63DG is one of those low-cost televisions. The Toshiba 50UL3B63DG is an affordable 50-inch entry-level television with impressive qualities and features.

Talking about affordability, this television has a price tag of $450.67 as of the time I wrote this review in November 2021.

Interestingly, this television doesn’t employ the likes of ROKU TV or Android TV for its smart operating system and features. Instead, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG uses Toshiba’s very own Smart Portal as well as an in-built Chromecast.

However, would the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG be able to perform better than televisions with ROKU TV OS or Android TV OS? That’s a question you will get an answer to in the rest of this article.

Toshiba 50UL3B63DG: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The Toshiba 50UL3B63DG doesn’t look like the typical low-cost television. To be more specific, this television has slim plastic bezels with a jet black finish that borders its display screen.

Awkwardly, there isn’t a “Toshiba” logo on any part of the bezels. Instead, the logo can be found on the television stand.

The Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s stand has this bulky rectangle shape and it is on the middle of the television’s bottom. However, the stand is very attractive, featuring a silver finish.

Also, the stand is very sturdy and it supports the television very well.

Moving on to the television’s back, you will find a pretty thick plastic panel. This plastic panel houses all of the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG components and ports.

However, due to the thickness of the plastic panel, the television will stick out if mounted on the wall.

Having mentioned the television’s thickness, I guess it is ideal to talk about its dimension and weight. Specifically, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG has a dimension of 1129 x 81 x 655 mm.

For weight, the television is quite heavy weighing a massive 13000 g. In comparison, the Insignia NS-50DF711SE21, as well as the Hisense 50H8G, weigh less than the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG.

To be more specific, the Insignia NS-50DF711SE21 weighs only 11702.6 g. The Hisense 50H8G, on the other hand, weighs 12791.3 g.

In conclusion, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG features a pretty distinctive look compared to other budget televisions. However, the television’s bulkiness and weight are huge flaws.

Therefore, I will be rating the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG an eight out of ten in this design review section.

Toshiba 50UL3B63DG: Display Features

For display, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG uses a 50-inch DLED display. What does a DLED display mean, though?

First and foremost, a DLED display is a type of LED display. Unlike the typical LED display, DLED displays have diodes that sit directly behind the screen rather than around its edges.

In terms of screen resolution, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s 50-inch DLED display has a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. This is an impressive feature considering the television’s affordable price tag.

Therefore, with its 4K resolution, the TV’s display will be able to deliver a wide range of colors. Additionally, the display will be able to produce excellent color accuracy and impressive picture quality.

Moving on, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display has an impressive contrast ratio of 3500:1. However, this is expected as the television’s DLED display uses VA technology.

To be more specific, LED displays that use VA (vertical alignment) technology often deliver high contrast ratio.

However, I know most of you must be confused about what “contrast ratio” really means. Thankfully, you are at www.itechguides.com where we offer comprehensive and explanatory reviews/articles to our readers.

Well, contrast ratio is the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black of a display screen. Additionally, a display’s contrast ratio is the most crucial aspect in determining the display’s capabilities of producing deep blacks.

Therefore, with a contrast ratio as high as 3500:1, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display will be able to produce deep blacks. As a result, users will get a pleasant viewing experience when watching dark scenes in movies.

Impressively, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display supports HDR in Dolby Vision and HDR10. HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a picture technique that enhances the contrast ratio of HDR contents on a display screen.

In addition to that, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display is also very bright. This display has a maximum brightness of 350 nits.

Moving on, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG comes with Toshiba’s very own TRU Picture technology/engine. This picture technology allows the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display to provide a smooth, more detailed viewing experience.

To do so, Toshiba’s TRU Picture technology comes with three different features. These features include TRU Flow, TRU Micro Dimming, and TRU Resolution.

TRU Flow analyzes contents and frames on the television’s display to decrease blur and keep up with fast-moving action scenes. TRU Micro Dimming feature, however, improves contrast by focusing on all the different regions of the content on the display.

Lastly, TRU Resolution upscale a wide variety of non-4K content on the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display. Therefore, allowing the television’s display to deliver a more refined picture quality that feels fully immersive when viewing non-4K content.

Moving on, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display has impressive wide viewing angles. Therefore, you should be able to view the television off-center without losing picture quality.

Furthermore, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display not only has wide viewing angles but also has excellent color reproduction. Specifically, this television’s display is capable of reproducing 100% of the Rec. 709 color space.

Moreover, the reflection handling of this television’s display is also impressive. This is because the display features a glossy finish that prevents direct sunlight or reflections on the display.

In conclusion, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s display has little to no flaws. Additionally, the Toshiba TRU Picture technology makes the television’s display stand out among other displays from budget televisions.

Therefore, in this review section, I believe a nine out of ten rating for the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG is fair.

Toshiba 50UL3B63DG: Sound Features

For sound production and output, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG makes use of a pair of 10W down-firing speakers. In terms of performance, these down-firing speakers are pretty loud and generate little to no distortion.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that this pair of down-firing speakers are designed by Onkyo. Onkyo Corporation is a Japanese consumer electronics company that specializes in high-end home theater and audio products.

Audio products Onkyo mostly produces are AV receivers, surround sound speakers, and portable speakers. Furthermore, the Japanese word Onkyo means “sound resonance.”

Moreover, as most people know, Onkyo is really good at making excellent speakers and any other audio equipment. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when I found out that the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG features some impressive down-firing speakers.

Moving on, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG also comes with a subwoofer for bass production. This subwoofer does its job pretty well, producing rich deep bass for movies and music.

Apart from the pair of down-firing speakers and a subwoofer, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG also features Dolby Audio for audio processing. This Dolby Audio enhances the performance of the television’s speakers.

It does this by improving the dialogue clarity that the speakers produce. Therefore, you will be able to hear crisp and clear dialogue in noisy action scenes or movies.

Additionally, Dolby Audio helps in improving the bass production of the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s subwoofers. Also, Dolby Audio makes sounds feel like they are coming from your surroundings and not from the down-firing speakers.

In summary, with the combination of Dolby Audio Processing and speakers from Onkyo, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG have everything to give viewers the best cinematic sound experience.

Therefore, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG deserves a nine out of ten in this sound features review section.

Toshiba 50UL3B63DG: Ports and Connectivity Features

Ports on the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG are quite adequate and should be sufficient for most users. Moreover, all of the television’s ports are housed on the back of the television.

However, some of the ports are on the left side of the television back. The remaining ports, on the other hand, are directly on the television’s back.

On the left side of the television’s back, there are two USB ports, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack. That is all you get for that part!

Therefore, directly on the television’s back is where the majority of the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s port lies. These ports include three HDMI ports, an Ethernet port, a composite video in, Digital Audio out, and an RF port.

Impressively, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG also features a VGA port. This is an impressive inclusion because TVs nowadays rarely have VGA port talkless of a low-cost television.

It is worth mentioning that this VGA port is directly on the back of the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG. For wireless connectivity, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG features Bluetooth as well as an in-built Wi-Fi.

Moving on, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG comes with a remote control, as expected. However, this remote control is a voice remote control, which means you can control the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG with voice commands.

To do so, you just have to hold down the microphone button on the remote control. After that, you then speak into the inbuilt microphone at the top of the remote control.

Furthermore, the television’s remote control is pretty big and chunky. However, this isn’t particularly a bad thing because it permits the remote to have enough buttons, which improves functionality.

Basically, this remote has a full number pad, which is uncommon on smart TVs remotes. In addition to that, the remote feature dedicated buttons for quick access to Netflix and YouTube.

Also, the remote has a circular navigation button as well as media playback buttons. Basically, there isn’t a single button you would need that isn’t on the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s voice remote.

In summary, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG comes with a sufficient number of ports that most users will appreciate. Also, despite its low price, the television comes with a voice remote control with lots of functionality.

Therefore, in this ports and connectivity review, I will rate the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG a nine out of ten.

Toshiba 50UL3B63DG: Smart Features

Most of you might expect the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG to feature either a ROKU TV OS or Android TV OS. Instead, the television makes use of Toshiba’s homegrown operating system called the Smart Portal for its “smart” department.

Moreover, the interface of this Smart Portal looks very much like Samsung’s Tizen operating system’. The major resemblance between Toshiba’s Smart Portal’s interface and Samsung’s Tizen’s interface is the home page.

Basically, both operating systems have a couple of icons at the bottom of their home screen page. You can scroll through these icons to find major streaming apps like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, and so on.

However, the Toshiba Smart Portal has some flaws like its sluggishness to load streaming apps. Also, the Smart Portal doesn’t come with most streaming apps found on other smart TV operating systems.

Basically, the Smart Portal lacks Disney+ and Apple TV. On a positive note, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG comes with an in-built Chromecast.

Chromecast is a Google streaming device that has in-built Wi-Fi. Additionally, Chromecast uses the Google Cast extension to stream content from Netflix, YouTube, and other services to a TV.

The content is said to be “cast” from a user’s phone, tablet, or computer to the television. Therefore, users can stream content from their smart devices to the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG thanks to its built-in Chromecast.

Moreover, other than featuring Toshiba Smart Portal and an in-built Chromecast, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG also comes with other smart features. Specifically, this television has an in-built far-field microphone to support voice control via Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

Therefore, even without a remote, you should be able to control the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG using voice commands. However, you have to be connected to the internet via WIFI to use this voice control feature.

In conclusion, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG’s Smart Portal is actually limited and has some flaws. However, the television compensates with its in-built Chromecast.

Therefore, I will rate the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG an eight out of ten in this smart features review section.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are Toshiba televisions superior to Samsung televisions?

Samsung TVs feature substantially better contrast ratios than other brands, resulting in deep blacks. They also have higher screen uniformity and color accuracy, as well as significantly better gradient handling.

Toshiba televisions, on the other hand, offer a faster response time, less input latency, and are actually brighter.

Conclusion

In my opinion, I believe the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG is worth way more than its $450.67 price tag. I am saying this because this television has little to no flaws even with its reasonably low price.

Specifically, this television has a brilliant DLED display that offers excellent picture quality. Also, the television features Toshiba’s TRU picture technology that further enhances the picture quality of the display.

That’s not all, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG also features excellent speakers with Dolby Audio technology for a seamless viewing/audio experience. However, the major flaw this television has is its heavyweight.

Regardless, the Toshiba 50UL3B63DG remains one of, if not the greatest, low-cost television I’ve seen in a while. Therefore, I strongly recommend this television to every reader reading this article.
