ASUS VivoBook F510QA Review: At First Glance

ASUS is one of the leading laptop manufacturers that is committed to producing laptops for every user. One of its prominent lineups of mid-range laptops is the ASUS VivoBook series which comprises different-sized laptops.

For this review, we will focus on the 15-inch ASUS VivoBook F510QA, which was released in 2019. This laptop has a similar exterior design as its predecessor, but its internal components have been upgraded.

Thankfully, the price tag is still relatively reasonable such that it can be easily afforded by everyone. Precisely, when I wrote this review in April 2022, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA had a start price of $384.00.

At this point, let us see what the ASUS VivoBook F510QA is offering us at that price point by proceeding to the next section.

ASUS VivoBook F510QA: Design, Dimensions, and Weight

As a low-cost laptop, it is okay to expect that the ASUS VivoBook F510QA will come in a cheap appearance. Fortunately, that is far from the case; in fact, the laptop comes in an elegant design with an attractive look.

However, the laptop’s inexpensive price comes to play by having this laptop’s chassis made of plastic. Hence, you should be expecting some level of fragility in this laptop casing, although it looks approvingly sturdy and rigid.

Furthermore, the laptop’s lid feels like a lens with a wave-like surface. The wave-like surface of the lid makes it seem like the surface is changing when you view it from different angles.

Another thing that will most likely increase your interest in the ASUS VivoBook F510QA is the gunmetal gray color it comes in. While admiring this laptop, you will also notice an ASUS logo at the center of the lid.

The silver logo blends nicely with the rest of the lid. When you open the lid, you will notice the long single hinge holding the lid and the laptop’s base together.

The hinge is rigid and does not permit the laptop lid to flex. In fact, you will need both hands to open the lid, with one hand holding the base down and the other hand lifting the lid.

Meanwhile, after opening the lid, you will love the 15.6-inch display of the ASUS VivoBook F510QA. Thankfully, the display has a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, which is decent for a 15-inch laptop in this price category.

With the Full HD display resolution, you stand to enjoy quality videos with enough clarity.

However, I need to prepare your mind for the thick bezels that surround this laptop’s display. Thankfully, the bezels are not just thick for nothing; the upper bezel houses the front fixed HD webcam, which works satisfactorily for video calls.

For the lower bezel, there you will find an ”ASUS” logo for brand recognition.

Moving on to the laptop’s base, there you will find an attractive keyboard. The keys have a decent key travel distance, and they produce minimal noise when typing.

Speaking of key travel distance, it refers to the distance through which the keys must be pressed in order to register an input. With the key travel of this laptop, users should be able to type fast and accurately.

Just below these keys, you will find the integrated touchpad that measures 104.14 mm by 73.66 mm. The touchpad is highly responsive and sensitive to finger touches.

Impressively, there is also a fingerprint reader at the top-left corner of the touchpad. With the help of the fingerprint reader, you can log in to Windows quickly by placing your registered finger on it.

Fingerprint authentication also helps to securely protect your work from intruders.

At this point, let us proceed to the sides of the laptop’s base, where you will find all the ports that this laptop comes with. Precisely, on the left side, you will find two USB 2.0 ports and an SD card reader.

Furthermore, on the right side, you will find one USB 3.2 Type-A port and one USB 3.2 Type-C port. Still, on the right side, you will also find one HDMI port, one combo headphone/microphone jack, and a power connector.

That said, let us also talk about the speakers on this laptop before we move away from the laptop’s base. Sadly, the dual speakers on this laptop did not do much to impress me.

To start with, the speakers produce a very low sound, and they lack adequate bass.

Secondly, the speakers are located beneath the laptop’s base which makes the sound muffled when the laptop is placed on a surface. Overall, the sound performance of the speakers is limited.

At this point, I will like to tell you about the weight and size of the ASUS VivoBook F510QA. In regards to that, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA is lightweight; it weighs only 1700 g.

For its dimension, the laptop measures 361.4 x 243.5 x 19.4 mm (W x D x H). Hence, you are correct if you call this ASUS VivoBook F510QA a portable and slim laptop.

In comparison, the Acer Aspire 5 A515 is heavier but slimmer than the ASUS VivoBook F510QA. To be precise, the Acer Aspire 5 A515 weighs 1900 g and measures 363.4 x 247.5 x 17.95 (W x D x H).

In conclusion, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA comes with a modern design and an attractive look. Other than the plastic chassis it comes with, its design is a pass for me.

Therefore, I will be rating the ASUS VivoBook F510QA eight out of ten in this design section of the review.

ASUS VivoBook F510QA: Processor (CPU) Performance

The ASUS VivoBook F510QA comes with a quad-core AMD A12-9720P processor. This processor has a base frequency of 2.70 GHz and a boost frequency of 3.60 GHz.

It also has a 2 MB cache memory for temporarily storing frequently used data. Although the AMD A12-9720P is an entry-level processor, it will perform a decent amount of processing tasks.

Hence, to have a better idea about the ASUS VivoBook F510QA’s processing performance, I will share its Cinebench R15 test result. In case that is new to you, Cinebench R15 is a test that evaluates the processing prowess of a computer.

Because this test checks the processor’s ability, it can either use a single processor core or all the processor cores. When a single processor core is used, it is referred to as a single-core test.

Meanwhile, when all the processor cores are used (four cores in the case of this laptop’s processor), it is referred to as a multi-core test. In any case, a higher score shows better processor performance.

Therefore, in the single-core test, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA scored 72.5 points. On the other hand, it scored 234.5 points on the multi-core test.

In comparison, the HP Pavilion 17z had a score of 69 points in the single-core test and 229 points in the multi-core test.

Meanwhile, I need to let you know that the HP Pavilion 17z also uses the same processor as the ASUS VivoBook F510QA. However, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA outperformed it.

Based on that, I will be rating the ASUS VivoBook F510QA a seven out of ten in this processor section of the review.

ASUS VivoBook F510QA: Memory (RAM) Performance

The ASUS VivoBook F510QA uses a DDR4 type of RAM on a single slot. Surprisingly, it comes with remarkable memory size.

Speaking of which, you can get this laptop with the least memory size of 8 GB or maximum memory size of 16 GB.

Therefore, if you buy a model of this laptop with 8 GB memory, you can remove it and insert 16 GB RAM. As expected, increasing the RAM capacity of your laptop will make it more efficient at multitasking.

For this review, we will focus on the performance of an ASUS VivoBook F510QA with 16 GB memory. In terms of multitasking, this laptop is capable of opening 25 Chrome browser tabs, with a few of the tabs streaming YouTube videos.

Thankfully, even with those multiple tabs running, you will not experience slowdowns. Moving from one browser tab to another will also be smooth.

Nevertheless, to ascertain this laptop’s memory performance, I will be sharing its PCMark test result. Talking about PCMark, this benchmark test evaluates a computer’s overall performance when performing real-world tasks.

Because these tasks depend heavily on the computer’s memory, the PCMark test is quite efficient at evaluating the memory’s performance. Once again, the computer with the highest mark in this test is considered the best.

That said, in the test, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA scored 6717 points.

In comparison, the ASUS VivoBook S14 performed lesser, with a total score of 3,933 points on the same test. Also, the Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen Edition performed below the ASUS VivoBook F510QA in the same test.

That is because the Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen Edition scored 6465 points.

Based on the results from the benchmark test, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA’s performance is outstanding. Therefore, I will be rating it nine out of ten in this memory section of the review.

ASUS VivoBook F510QA: Storage Options and Performance

Regarding storage, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA uses SSD storage which is available in two different capacities. Firstly, you can get this laptop with a 256 GB storage capacity.

Also, you can get this laptop with a 512 GB storage capacity. Thankfully, SSD storage is very efficient, and it has the fastest speed among other storage types.

Therefore, in terms of transfer speed, you should have nothing to worry about if you decide to buy this laptop. However, the storage capacities offered by this laptop are meager, in my opinion.

Hence, users who store a lot of heavy files might find the storage space inadequate, especially the 256 GB models.

Nonetheless, it will impress you to know that this laptop comes with a 2-in-1 card reader for either SD or SDHC cards. Therefore, you can use those cards for external storage expansion.

At this point, let us proceed to the performance evaluation of this laptop’s storage. To do that, we will check out the performance of a 256 GB model of this laptop in a CrystalDiskMark test.

For your information, CrystalDiskMark is a benchmark test that measures the sequential read and write speed of a computer’s storage.

For an in-depth understanding, read speed reveals how long it takes a file to be opened on a computer. On the other hand, write speed shows how long it takes a computer to save files.

Meanwhile, higher speeds from this test are considered the best.

With that in mind, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA had a read speed of 509 MBps in the test. It also had a write speed of 244 MBps.

In the same test, the ASUS VivoBook 17 had a read speed of 1606 MBps and a write speed of 973.1 MBps. The interpretation of the test comparison is that the ASUS Vivobook 17 will open and save files faster than the ASUS VivoBook F510QA.

However, the ASUS Vivobook 17 uses a 512 GB SSD. In conclusion, the storage performance of this laptop in the CrystalDiskMark test also did not impress me.

Also, the storage capacity available on this laptop might be inadequate for heavy storage users. However, it is good to see that ASUS made provision for external storage expansion.

Putting all that together, I have decided to rate the ASUS VivoBook F510QA seven out of ten in this storage review section.

ASUS VivoBook F510QA: Graphics Card Performance

The ASUS VivoBook F510QA comes with integrated AMD Radeon R7 Graphics. This graphics card can be overclocked to a frequency of 758 MHz.

As an integrated graphics card, the AMD Radeon R7 does not have video RAM (VRAM); instead, it uses the computer’s memory. Because of that, laptops with integrated graphics cards are not suitable for handling graphics-intensive applications.

Hence, you should not expect so much from the ASUS VivoBook F510QA either. However, with the AMD Radeon R7 graphics card, you can still play some games in a reasonable graphics setting.

For instance, you can play Rainbow Six Siege 2015 smoothly at 55 fps.

Also, the laptop should play Fallout 4 2015 at 23.6 fps. Meanwhile, all these games can be played at these fps on a low graphics setting.

Nonetheless, to further show the graphics performance of this laptop, I will present its 3DMark test result. Before I get into that, you should be aware that a 3DMark benchmark measures a computer’s overall graphics rendering performance.

It is also important to note that, in this test, a higher score shows better performance.

Therefore, from the test result, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA scored 4719.5 points. However, to know if this score is good enough, I will be comparing it with the score of other laptops in its category.

Speaking of which, the Lenovo IdeaPad Z50-75 with AMD Radeon R6 graphics card had a score of 4014 points in the same test. Furthermore, the HP 17z with AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics card scored 3871 points.

In a nutshell, the ASUS VivoBook F510QA outperforms other laptops that I compared it with, although it features a more powerful graphics card. In addition, this laptop can play some games, but you will need to stick with the lowest graphics settings.

Based on these facts about the ASUS VivoBook F510QA’s graphics, I will be rating it eight out of ten in this section.

ASUS VivoBook F510QA: Battery life and Performance

The ASUS VivoBook F510QA is powered by a 3-cell, 42 WHrs Li-ion battery. I can not specifically say how long this battery can last because ASUS did not specify it.

However, with the battery capacity, the laptop should be able to last through some reasonable work hours. For more insight into the battery performance of this laptop, let us consider a battery test.

The battery test involved continuously surfing the web until the fully charged battery drains. While the test was performed, it took the laptop 6 hours and 43 minutes before shutting down.

Therefore, based on its 6 hours of battery life as judged by the test, you will not be getting an all-day battery life from it. Hence, there will be a need to always have your power pack with you so as to charge it after some hours of continuous usage.

In comparison, the HP 17z, which comes with 3 cell 41 Wh Li-ion battery, lasted longer in the test. Specifically, it lasted 8 hours despite its slightly smaller battery capacity.

In addition to that, the ASUS Vivobook S14 with a 3-Cell 50 Wh Li-ion battery lasted longer than the ASUS VivoBook F510QA. The ASUS Vivobook S14 delivered a battery life of 10 hours in the web surfing test.

In conclusion, the outcome of the test shows that you might need to carry your power pack with you everywhere you go. Based on that, I will be rating the ASUS VivoBook F510QA seven out of ten in this section.
