A low espresso-pressure reading does not automatically mean the pump has failed. Pressure builds against resistance: a fast-flowing or poorly prepared coffee puck can produce a low reading during a shot even when the machine can build pressure. First identify whether the problem is low pressure during extraction, weak water flow with the portafilter removed, or no water at all; each points to a different cause.
Start by identifying what is actually low
Note when the symptom occurs and which gauge you are reading. A rotary-pump machine’s main gauge measures pump output; a grouphead gauge reflects pressure building at the group. Those readings are not interchangeable. A low reading during a shot is also different from weak free flow from the grouphead with the portafilter removed.
- Low pressure only during a shot: Check grind, dose, puck preparation, and basket condition before suspecting the pump.
- Weak flow with no portafilter: Look first for a water-supply restriction, blockage, or machine fault.
- No flow: Check the tank or plumbing, accessible lines, and possible restrictions; do not open a hot, pressurized machine.
- Hot water or steam still works: Record that observation, along with whether the machine is tank-fed or plumbed. It can help narrow the fault, but does not by itself identify a failed part.
A pressure figure is meaningful only in context. Clive Coffee describes 9 bar (130 psi) as the commercial standard for the vibratory-pump machines covered in its brew-pressure guide; that is not a universal target for every machine or gauge.
Fix the common coffee-side causes first
Check grind, dose, and puck preparation
If a machine builds pressure during an appropriate backflush or blank test but shows low pressure while brewing, investigate the coffee puck first. Water passing too freely through the puck may not build the expected resistance. Adjust the grind and prepare the puck consistently, changing one variable at a time so you can see what affects the reading and flow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect and clean the basket
A blocked basket can disrupt brewing. De’Longhi’s guidance for La Specialista also identifies excess coffee and grounds that are too fine as causes of excessive group-head pressure that can stop brewing. Rinse the basket, check that its holes are open, keep the dose within the basket’s indicated level, and try a coarser grind if needed. These are La Specialista-specific troubleshooting points; for another model, follow its manual. See the De’Longhi US FAQ.
Clean the machine using its approved procedure
Rocket Espresso recommends cleaning as the first step for flow problems. Remove coffee residue from user-serviceable parts and use only the cleaning and backflushing routine specified by your machine’s manufacturer. If the machine supports backflushing, use only a compatible espresso-machine cleaning powder or tablet and follow the manual’s directions. Cleaner can remove residue; it is not a guaranteed fix for a supply, valve, or pump fault. Rocket’s flow troubleshooting FAQ discusses cleaning and possible restrictions.

Check the water supply and accessible restrictions
- Tank-fed machine: Confirm the tank is full, seated correctly, and that accessible inlet or return tubes are positioned as the manual specifies.
- Plumbed machine: Check for an interrupted supply and consider whether an inline filter or softener is restricting flow.
- Visible tubing: Look for kinks or pinches, but do not dismantle the machine to reach internal lines.
- Persistent restriction: A stuck valve is one possible cause identified in Rocket’s troubleshooting guidance; internal valve work is a service task unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a safe user procedure.
Use a pressure or flow test to separate puck issues from machine faults
A model-approved backflush or blank test can help establish whether the pump can build pressure against resistance. Compare that result with what happens during extraction: if pressure is available under the test but not with coffee, revisit grind and puck preparation. If pressure remains low, investigate supply and internal components according to the exact model’s service instructions.
Published numerical checks are model-specific, not universal instructions. In its Slayer 1-Group guidance, Clive Coffee gives about 4 ounces in 10 seconds for free grouphead flow in full-brew mode and states an ideal inlet-water flow of 2 GPM, plus or minus 0.5 GPM. The same guide checks pump setting with a backflush blank, leakage at expansion and three-way valves, and inlet-water supply before treating pump failure as the likely remaining fault. Those figures and steps apply to the Slayer 1-Group only; see Clive Coffee’s Slayer 1-Group troubleshooting guide.

Clive’s general vibratory-pump guide says a machine may take about 10 seconds to reach 9 bar during backflushing as a troubleshooting cue. This is not a universal pump-life threshold or a test for every machine. Use the test and expected result in your own model’s manual rather than applying another machine’s numbers.

If cleaning, accessible supply checks, and the manufacturer’s user-level tests do not resolve the problem, or the next step involves opening the case, electrical work, pump replacement, or valve repair, consult the exact service manual or a qualified technician. Confirm the correct part and compatibility before any replacement; a low gauge reading alone is not enough to diagnose a failed pump.
