On CentOS 7 or RHEL 7, install the C and C++ compilers with sudo yum install gcc gcc-c++. If you need the wider build toolchain, use sudo yum groupinstall "Development Tools" instead. Important: CentOS Linux 7 reached end of life on June 30, 2024, and packages in the CentOS Vault archive do not receive security updates.
Install GCC and G++ on CentOS 7 or RHEL 7
Open a terminal account with sudo privileges and install the compiler packages directly:
sudo yum install gcc gcc-c++The gcc package provides the C compiler; gcc-c++ provides the C++ compiler. Yum will resolve and install required dependencies from the repositories enabled on the machine. On RHEL, access to repositories depends on the host’s configured subscriptions and entitlements.
When to install the Development Tools group
For a broader build environment, install the package group:

sudo yum groupinstall "Development Tools"Red Hat describes the RHEL 7 group as a basic development environment. Its mandatory packages include gcc, gcc-c++, binutils, make, autoconf, automake, bison, flex, and libtool; the default package list also includes tools such as git and gcc-gfortran. Exact group contents and package availability depend on configured repositories. Red Hat recommends installing a group with yum groupinstall; group names can vary between major releases. Choose the direct package command when you only need C and C++. Choose the group when your build workflow needs supporting tools as well. Either approach requires accessible repositories that provide the requested packages.

Check the installed compiler and repository access
RHEL 7’s standard primary compiler baseline is GCC 4.8, according to Red Hat’s version table. Other versions may be available through separately enabled repositories or toolsets, so this baseline does not guarantee the version installed on every host. Use these checks to inspect enabled repositories, group metadata, and whether the compiler packages are installed:

yum group list
yum group info "Development Tools"
rpm -q gcc gcc-c++The repository list and subscription entitlements are specific to each RHEL system. Do not assume an installation command will succeed until the required repositories are enabled and reachable.
Troubleshoot a missing Development Tools group
If yum reports “No packages in any requested group available to install or update,” the cause may be unavailable repositories or missing group metadata rather than an incorrect compiler package name. A group can also appear uninstalled if its packages were installed individually or the installed-groups metadata is missing. Inspect the group with yum group info "Development Tools". If the needed packages are already installed, you can mark the group as installed in yum’s records:
sudo yum groups mark install "Development Tools"This command only marks group status; it does not download packages or restore repository access. If packages are missing, resolve repository access and group metadata before retrying the group installation. Red Hat: System Administrator’s Guide, Yum

CentOS Linux 7 is no longer supported
CentOS Linux 7 reached end of life on June 30, 2024. The CentOS Vault preserves archived content, but it is not an updated installation tree and the CentOS project does not publish security updates in those archived trees. An archive may help maintain a legacy host, but installing from it does not make CentOS 7 supported or security-updated. CentOS Project: CentOS Linux CentOS Project: Download and Vault information
