Choose colocation when you want to run your own hardware in a third-party facility that supplies space and building services such as power and cooling. The models can overlap: a colocation facility may host a hyperscale tenant. Neither option is universally cheaper, so the right fit depends on your workload, operating responsibilities, location, and contract.
What hyperscale and colocation mean
Hyperscale describes scale and an operating model
Hyperscale refers to infrastructure designed to operate at very large scale, commonly associated with major cloud and technology operators. It is not a universally defined facility-size threshold. In practice, the distinction matters because a hyperscale provider operates infrastructure designed for large-scale demand, while customers generally consume capacity or services rather than manage the underlying facility and hardware themselves.
Colocation describes what you lease
With colocation, an organization leases capacity in a data-center facility and operates its own IT equipment. The facility provider supplies building infrastructure such as power and cooling, but the precise boundary between customer and provider responsibilities depends on the contract. For terminology, see IBM’s hyperscale data center explainer.
The two models can coexist
Hyperscale and colocation are not mutually exclusive categories. A colocation provider can host a hyperscale technology company, and wholesale colocation may be designed around hyperscaler requirements. In Uptime Institute’s 2024 global survey, 61% of surveyed colocation providers reported hosting hyperscale technology companies; that is a survey finding about respondents, not a proportion of all data centers worldwide. Uptime Institute’s 2024 survey provides the context.

Compare the options against your workload
Start with the workload you need to run, not with a label. Compare both options against the same demand assumptions and service requirements.
| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Workload scale and shape | What is current steady-state demand? How high are peaks, how fast is demand growing, and is it predictable or variable? |
| Economics | Model capital investment and recurring charges alongside committed capacity, power and network costs, staffing, hardware refreshes, and exit costs. |
| Control and responsibility | Who chooses and operates hardware, manages facility services, performs maintenance, and controls configuration? Confirm the division in the contract. |
| Capacity and deployment | Is the required power and cooling available at the necessary density? What expansion rights and realistic delivery dates are offered in the target geography? |
| Network and location | What latency, interconnection, data-location, and proximity requirements apply to users and other systems? |
| Resilience and compliance | What availability design, security responsibilities, audit evidence, and regulatory constraints apply to this workload? |
| Efficiency evidence | Are figures comparable by measurement boundary, geography, operating load, and reporting period? |
Is one option cheaper?
There is no evidence-based universal cost winner. Uptime Institute’s December 2025 survey summary reports respondents’ own comparisons: 28% said provisioning workloads was cheaper in colocation than in their own data center, while 42% said their own data center was cheaper. In direct comparisons of colocation with public cloud, 47% said colocation was cheaper and 29% said public cloud was cheaper. These are respondents’ reported opinions, not provider quotes or a controlled total-cost study; they do not establish which option will cost less for your workload. How to read data-center efficiency claims
Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is total facility energy divided by the energy used for computing. A lower PUE indicates less facility overhead relative to computing energy, but a provider-wide figure does not predict the result at a particular site.

Google reports a 2025 fleet-wide average PUE of 1.09 for its large-scale data centers once they reach stable operations. This is a Google-reported, provider-specific figure—not an industry-wide benchmark or a guarantee for an individual facility. Google’s data-center efficiency information describes its reporting.
Comparisons also need to account for geography and measurement conditions. Microsoft notes that location factors such as climate and ambient temperature can affect PUE and water-efficiency results. Compare the reporting period, geographic coverage, operating conditions, and measurement boundary before treating two figures as like-for-like. Microsoft’s efficiency information explains these factors.

Choose based on operating fit, not the label
Hyperscale is a stronger fit when
- Your demand is very large and can use provider-operated, standardized infrastructure.
- You prefer consuming infrastructure capacity or services over selecting and operating the underlying hardware yourself.
- The provider can meet your location, network, resilience, security, and compliance requirements under acceptable terms.
Colocation is a stronger fit when
- You want to operate your own IT equipment while leasing facility capacity.
- You need control over hardware choices or configurations and can take responsibility for the associated operation.
- A specific facility can meet your power, cooling, density, expansion, location, and interconnection needs.
Validate the proposal before committing
- Document steady-state demand, peaks, growth, and the service levels the workload requires.
- Define which party supplies, operates, maintains, and secures each part of the stack; verify those boundaries in the proposed contract.
- Confirm available capacity, density, expansion rights, network options, and delivery dates for the required location.
- Compare total costs across the same time horizon and assumptions, including refresh, staffing, power, networking, and exit costs.
- Check resilience, compliance evidence, data-location terms, and the basis of any efficiency claims against the workload’s requirements.
Colocation terminology and service boundaries vary, so treat older provider explainers as background rather than evidence of current prices or availability. For example, Equinix’s 2020 colocation explainer can help clarify the model, but a current facility proposal and contract determine what is actually offered.
