65UK6500AUA: At First Glance

Year after year, we see television manufacturers making our viewing experience better and LG is one of those manufacturers. The South Korean company has been manufacturing intelligent and reliable smart televisions since 2007.

In the case of the LG UK6500AUA, this television series comes in 43, 50, 55, and 65 inches variants. Our focus in this review though is the 65-inch model which is known as the LG 65UK6500AUA.

With many smart televisions from LG, it can be confusing to get just the right one for your needs. In this review, you’ll be sure to find out how befitting or not the LG 65UK6500AUA is for you!

65UK6500AUA: Design, Dimensions, and Weight

Starting with looks, the LG 65UK6500AUA looks like a more sophisticated variant of the LG 65UK6300PUE. Unlike the LG 65UK6300PUE, the LG 65UK6500AUA has an appealing, slim metal frame.

With this slim frame, you’ll be viewing the television screen most of the time without any bulky edges. An aspect of the TV you’ll find bulky though is its plastic back panel.

Notwithstanding, you’ll only notice the plastic back of this LG TV when you look at its sides. With my description of the LG 65UK6500AUA so far, you’re probably wondering if it can still be considered slim.

Well, the LG 65UK6500AUA is definitely not as slim as the 65-inch LG OLED WX Series that’s literally as slim as a sheet of paper! However, the LG 65UK6500AUA is slim enough for a budget television.

To give a more descriptive image of the slimness of this LG television, I’ll talk about its dimensions.

When we talk about dimensions, we’re referring to the width, depth, and height of a device. In the case of the LG 65UK6500AUA, this TV has a dimension of 1455.4 x 66 x 840.7 mm (W x D x H) respectively.

If you’re wondering how this compares to other smart televisions in this price range – I’ll give you an idea by making one or two comparisons. One good example is the Samsung UN65RU7100FXZA which has a dimension of 1457 x 58.4 x 838 mm (W x D x H).

With such a dimension, the Samsung TV is wider and slimmer when compared to the LG TV. Nonetheless, the LG 65UK6500AUA is a relatively slim television.

Asides from knowing a television’s dimensions, you’ll also want to know if its weight is fit enough for your wall or table TV setup. In the case of the LG 65UK6500AUA, it weighs reasonably at 25990.8 g.

I referred to its weight as reasonable because it’s very similar to the 24992 g weight of the Samsung UN65RU7100FXZA.

From the look of things, we can say that the LG 65UK6500AUA weighs closely to its counterparts. Furthermore, this weight does not prevent you from either using a table-stand or wall-mounting this television.

As a matter of fact, LG made it clear that the 65UK6500AUA follows the VESA wall-mounting standard of 300 x 300 mm. In case you didn’t know, this 300 x 300 mm is the distance between the four holes behind the TV that is used to wall-mount it.

That aside, if on the other hand, you want this TV away from the wall, you can set up it on a table stand. Thankfully, LG made sure to include sturdy plastic stands fit enough to hold the TV.

Sometimes, our decision on whether to wall-mount or stand a television is greatly influenced by the position of ports on a TV. Well, like most modern televisions, the LG 65UK6500AUA has ports on its side and back which will be my focus in the fourth section of this review.

Having highlighted all these design features, it’s realistic to call the LG 65UK6500AUA a good-looking TV that’s fit for any set-up. Following that, the design features of the LG 65UK6500AUA deserve a rating of eight out of ten in this review section.

65UK6500AUA: Display Features

Now that we’re done with the design, the display features of the LG 65UK6500AUA are another core aspect to consider. LG smart televisions are known to provide impeccable display features, let’s see if this television also meets this standard.

To kick off, the LG 65UK6500AUA is a 65-inch television with 4K Ultra HD resolution (3840 x 2160). To make more sense, this 4K resolution is four times sharper and clearer than any typical HD resolution.

Thanks to the 4K resolution of this television, you will get a crispy and appealing display altogether. Furthermore, the in-built picture processor feature in this television makes sure that any low-resolution image is immediately upgraded to 4K UHD.

This means that images and videos which originally have low resolution will automatically upgrade to the higher 4K resolution without you moving a muscle. Even with all the positives so far, the display features of this television do not end there.

Another display feature of the LG 65UK6500AUA is the IPS LED display panel. The IPS LED of this television provides great viewing angles and good color reproduction.

This means that you’ll be able to still clearly see the rich colors of the on-screen display of this television even if you’re seated sideways. Apparently, you don’t have to worry about your visitors sitting on the other side of the room – because they will get a good view.

Speaking of which, there is an additional feature of this television that enhances the viewing experience. To be precise, I am talking about the HDR10 and HLG compatibility of the LG 65UK6500AUA.

HDR (high dynamic range) is a display format that enhances the color, brightness, and sharpness of an image. You should be concerned about this because HDR provides far more profound display quality.

Notably, HDR is restricted to streaming movies and video games. This means that you’ll get the most out of HDR when you use streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Now that you know what HDR is, let’s get to the meaning of HLG. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is a similar kind of HDR format created by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation).

You’re probably wondering why BBC would get involved in display formats right? Well, BBC wanted to make their content more enjoyable for their viewers.

To do that, they created HLG which is designed for broadcast cable television, news TV, and satellite. In plain terms, HDR serves for streaming videos while HLG serves for 4K broadcast channels.

With the inclusion of the HLG and HDR in the LG 65UK6500AUA, you will definitely get good display quality for both news channels and movies.

By the way, while enjoying this news or movies, do not try to open the windows during the day. This is because this LG television is very reflective and as such, the rays of sunlight would interrupt your viewing.

Moreover, this TV is so reflective that you can almost use it as an alternative mirror. Now that you know what it’s like using this TV during the day, let’s talk about nighttime.

The display of LG 65UK6500AUA does not look so great when it comes to viewing dark scenes at night. This means that instead of portraying deep blacks, this TV will show some grayish colors.

However, these grayish colors are not so noticeable or something to worry about.

That aside, there are two display features that deal with fast-motion content and games – which are the response time and input lag of this television. The LG 65UK6500AUA has a response time of 9 milliseconds while the input lag is 10 milliseconds.

To further explain, response time is the least amount of time it takes a TV display to transition from one color to another. In the case of the LG 65UK6500AUA, the 9ms response rate means you’ll enjoy smooth fast-motion movies, games, and sports.

Input lag, on the other hand, also contributes to your gaming experience on this television. To provide more details, input lag is how long it takes a display in responding to an output signal – for example, from a gamepad.

Preferably, the smaller an input lag, the better. With that in mind, the 10ms input lag of the LG 65UK6500AUA will provide a smooth gaming experience without lags.

To round up this section, I will rate the display features of the LG 65UK6500AUA an eight in this review. This is a reasonable rating because there are more things to love than hate about the display of this LG TV.

65UK6500AUA: Sound Features

Sound features of the LG 65UK6500AUA start with its built-in 20-watts dual-channel speakers. When we say dual channel, it means there are two speakers with each having 10-watts of sound.

Now that you know the figures, you’re definitely more interested in the performance of these speakers. As regards that, these 20-watts speakers perform well in an average-sized room.

However, if you’re looking to use this TV in a room larger than that size, then you’ll have to use external speakers.

Even though it will cost you extra, using external speakers will enhance the loudness, bass, and sound clarity of the LG 65UK6500AUA. Speaking of bass, this LG TV does not produce enough thumps and rumble ideal for good bass.

On the other hand, the sound clarity of the LG 65UK6500AUA is quite good. As a matter of fact, LG partnered with an audio equipment manufacturer called – Harman and Kardon, to create an impressive ultra surround feature.

This ultra surround feature does the job of enhancing dialogue (conversation between two actors) and further balancing it with background music. This is what gives that total sound immersion and great theater experience when watching a movie.

Another aspect of sound to be concerned about is what we call Total Harmonic Distortion; also known as THD. To explain it simply, THD is the total amount of sound disturbance a signal produces.

Ideally, a good THD should be about 1.0, however, the LG 65UK6500AUA goes slightly above that, with a THD of 1.2. This 1.2 THD in this TV is almost unnoticeable so you have nothing to worry about.

As a result, you can be sure that the sound distortion of this speaker will not interfere with its overall sound quality.

From all indications, this LG TV has good sound quality. Regardless, I’ll advise you to get external speakers if you want the very best in sound quality.

As for ratings, the sound feature and performance of the LG 65UK6500AUA are best rated an eight in this review.

65UK6500AUA: Ports and Connectivity Features

In the aspects of ports, the LG 65UK6500AUA has the typical ports we are used to in televisions. LG also positioned these ports on the rear and side of the television.

Even though the ports are positioned in different areas, you’ll still find more ports at the rear and a smaller amount on the side. The shortcoming of this is the fact that you’ll likely find it difficult using the ports at the back if you end up wall-mounting this TV.

Now that I have highlighted the port positioning, you probably want to know exactly which ports are at the back and the side. At the back of the TV, you’ll see two HDMI ports; of which one is Audio Return Channel (ARC) enabled.

To further clarify that, having an ARC-enabled HDMI port means you can easily connect this television to a subwoofer or a pair of speakers via this HDMI port.

Still at the back of this TV, there is one USB port, RF In, composite In, digital audio out, and an Ethernet port. On the television’s side, however, there are two HDMI ports and one USB port.

Away from the ports, the LG 65UK6500AUA also features Bluetooth (4.2), and built-in WiFi connectivity. Another connectivity feature of this television is the remote control.

In that aspect, this LG TV comes with the standard universal LG remote. This standard remote is different from the more advanced magic remote we’re used to seeing in LG smart televisions.

As a matter of fact, the standard remote is rather basic than the motion-sensor magic remote that has a built-in microphone. To provide descriptive details, the standard remote is plainly flat unlike the curved design of the magic remote.

Regardless, the design of the standard remote makes it comfortable and easy to use. Furthermore, the rubber keys on this remote are responsive and easy to press.

Also on the keys, this standard remote features dedicated Netflix and Amazon prime buttons. These buttons allow you to connect to these apps with a single press.

Notably, if you are a big fan of the magic remote, you could purchase one for this TV. Thankfully, the LG 65UK6500AUA supports LG’s magic remote which means you can purchase it at an extra cost and ditch the standard remote.

In a nutshell, LG equipped this TV with all the essential ports and connectivity features. For that reason, I will rate the LG 65UK6500AUA an eight in this section.

65UK6500AUA: Smart Features

Like recent LG televisions, the LG 65UK6500AUA is a smart TV which means it comes equipped with LG’s WebOS. If you didn’t know, WebOS is an LG-owned smart TV operating system that allows you to control and have access to LG’s features.

The user interface of this operating system is very responsive, easy to navigate, and provides a smooth experience as you move between apps and features.

As expected, the WebOS gives access to the television’s built-in applications such as Hulu, Web browser, Netflix, YouTube, and so on. Additionally, you can install more applications to the LG 65UK6500AUA thanks to the LG content store.

This LG content store is the app store from LG to get more applications that you’ll need. It’s worth noting however that you would not find a wide range of apps on this platform like that of the Google play store.

This LG TV’s impressive features do not end there, the LG 65UK6500AUA has the LG ThinQ. The ThinQ is LG’s very own AI (artificial intelligence) feature that lets you get things done without pressing a button.

Fortunately, the LG ThinQ is compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. This means you can send voice commands to this TV.

However, you need to use LG’s magic remote with an in-built microphone to activate both platforms. Apparently, you will have to purchase the magic remote separately because the standard universal remote LG provided will not do the job.

Even though you’ll have to purchase a separate remote that’ll cost you more, this TV has impressive smart features. Taking all that into consideration, the LG 65UK6500AUA has smart features worth an eight in this review section.

Conclusion

In conclusion, one undeniably good thing about LG is how they are able to provide just what your money can buy. The LG 65UK6500AUA is a good balance of value and money.

For a mid-range smart television, this LG TV is worth recommending. From the look of things, the flaws of this TV are not burdensome if you can get additional soundbars to its speakers.

Another thing you’ll have to manage on this television is how it struggles with dark scenes. Asides from those flaws, the LG 65UK6500AUA is definitely usable.
