Overall
3.6

  • Well-spaced keyboard

Cons

  • No touchscreen option
  • Low screen resolution

HP Laptop 17: At First Glance

With so many 17-inch laptops to chose from, it has become much more difficult to decide which to purchase. However, the majority of these laptops don’t seem to tend to the needs of mainstream consumers.

The HP Laptop 17 is regarded as one of those 17-inch laptops that meets the needs of the majority of consumers – except gaming needs.

Moreover, HP equipped the HP Laptop 17 with hardware components that should be powerful enough to handle various productivity tasks. However, its screen resolution appears relatively low.

HP Laptop 17: Design, Dimension, and Weight

The HP Laptop 17 is an attractive laptop with a simple design. Its appearance is not flashy, therefore you can confidently use the laptop in an official setting.

This laptop has a smooth and well-finished aluminum chassis. However, the HP Laptop 17 is not built totally with aluminum.

Its underside is made of plastic with a moderate Silver finish just like its aluminum parts. Hence, it looks as though it is completely made of aluminum.

Moreover, the HP Laptop 17’s keyboard deck has the same Silver color scheme on its body. The keyboard itself has a Silver color.

Thanks to the large size of this laptop, its keyboard is well-spaced. As a result, typing on the laptop is comfortable.

Also, the touchpad maintains the same Silver color scheme. It is a bit wider than the regular touchpad, therefore it feels spacious for swiping and it is sensitive enough.

Naturally, you’d expect a laptop with a large screen to be a bit large. This is exactly the case with this laptop.

It measures 414.8 x 272.2 x 245 mm. It is also not very light – it weighs 2380 g.

The HP Laptop 17 offers a fair selection of ports. You get 2 USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, an RJ-45B port, and a headphone jack.

Overall, the HP Laptop 17 is moderately designed, so it feels just right for the regular user. Therefore, it scores eight in this review.

HP Laptop 17: Processor (CPU) Performance

The HP Laptop 17 features an Intel Core i5-1035G1 processor. This processor has 4 cores and a 6 MB cache.

Also, the HP Laptop 17 processor has a base frequency of 1.00 GHz and a maximum frequency of 3.60 GHz.

The HP Laptop 17 is capable of handling productivity tasks and creative projects. Its processor performance performs above expectations.

Moreover, the HP Laptop 17 easily handles word processing, emailing, web browsing, and several basic tasks. In fact, it excels at photo editing, video editing, and even music production.

In addition, it scored 2,150 on a Geekbench 4 test. This score puts the laptop in the mid-level range like the similarly equipped HP 17-BY3613DX (specifications vary a little).

In conclusion, the HP Laptop 17 scores an eight in this review for its impressive CPU performance.

HP Laptop 17: Memory (RAM) Performance

The HP Laptop 17 comes with 16 GB DDR4 RAM. The laptop has 2 RAM slots that make it possible to upgrade its RAM if your unit has less than the maximum of 16 GB.

The HP Laptop 17 is good at basic multitasking. However, overloading the laptop with too many tasks slows it down.

Nevertheless, the HP Laptop 17 ran 20 browser tabs smoothly while a YouTube video was streaming. During the entire process, there was no stuttering.

However, it began to stutter with an extra workload. As a result, this laptop scores an eight for its moderate multitasking capability.

HP Laptop 17: Storage Options and Performance

The HP Laptop 17 comes with 128 GB of M.2 SSD. The laptop’s storage options also include a multi-format SD card reader.

This laptop’s Solid-state drive further improves its speed. The overall workflow is more swift thanks to the SSD.

The 128 GB storage capacity is large enough to store light programs and files. However, the 128 GB capacity may quickly become fully occupied if you store a lot of files.

A test was carried out to ascertain the HP Laptop 17 storage speed. It duplicated 4.97 GB of multimedia files in 47 seconds at a rate of 87.4 MBps.

Hence, it scores a seven in this review because its storage speed compensates a little for its small capacity.

HP Laptop 17: Graphics Card Performance

The HP Laptop 17 features integrated Intel UHD Graphics. The graphics card has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a maximum boost frequency of 1050 MHz.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with a dedicated VRAM.

This laptop’s graphics card doesn’t satisfy a lot in terms of gaming. It is much more suited for photo and video editing.

The gaming tests carried out on the HP Laptop 17 further seals its low-level gaming status. It barely offers playable frame rates for less graphically intensive games not to mention the AAA games.

Furthermore, the HP Laptop 17 played Dirt3 at an unimpressive rate of 15FPS. However, you will get a little bit better frame rate when you reduce the graphical settings.

This laptop’s performance with AAA games is very underwhelming. Games like The Witcher, Overwatch, Battleground V were barely playable.

Therefore it scores a five in this graphics card review because of its poor gaming performance.

HP Laptop 17: Battery Life and Performance

The HP Laptop 17 comes with a 3-Cell 41 Wh battery. HP claims that this laptop’s battery can last up to 6 hours on mixed usage.

They also claim that it will last up to 7 hours and 45 minutes with video playback.

However, the HP Laptop 17 did not last beyond 5 hours and 15 minutes on a battery test. It was tested with continuous web browsing and basic computing operations.

Nonetheless, it is okay for a 17-inch laptop. It even lasts longer than the category average battery life (4 hours 30 minutes).

Therefore, it scores a seven in this review because its battery life is very okay.
