To fix Yoast XML sitemap issues in WordPress, open https://yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml, enable XML sitemaps in Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features, save WordPress permalinks, remove competing sitemap generators, purge every cache layer, and test the raw XML. The correct repair depends on whether the response is a 404, HTML, blank, stale, malformed, or missing URLs.

Yoast normally generates its XML sitemap dynamically, so publishing or editing content does not usually require a manual “regenerate sitemap” operation. The goal is not to list every URL stored in WordPress. The goal is to expose the canonical, indexable URLs that the site wants search engines to discover.

Key takeaways

  • The standard current Yoast sitemap index is /sitemap_index.xml, not necessarily /sitemap.xml.
  • Saving Settings → Permalinks refreshes WordPress rewrite rules and is a recommended first response to a sitemap 404.
  • A sitemap can be valid yet intentionally omit URLs that are noindex, redirected, non-canonical, private, unpublished, or excluded by content-type settings.
  • Google’s documented limit for one sitemap is 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs; larger sites should split URLs across child sitemaps.
  • Submitting a sitemap to Google Search Console is a crawl and discovery hint, not a guarantee that Google will index every listed URL.

What is the correct Yoast XML sitemap URL?

The correct standard Yoast XML sitemap URL is https://yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. Replace yourdomain.com with the site’s preferred domain, including the correct HTTPS and www or non-www format.

The sitemap index normally links to child sitemaps such as these:

Possible child sitemap What it may contain
post-sitemap.xml Published, eligible blog posts
page-sitemap.xml Eligible pages
category-sitemap.xml Eligible category archives
author-sitemap.xml Eligible author archives
product-sitemap.xml Eligible WooCommerce products, when applicable

The exact child sitemaps depend on the site’s post types, taxonomies, plugins, and Yoast visibility settings. Yoast recommends submitting the sitemap index rather than submitting every child sitemap separately; see Yoast’s sitemap submission instructions.

Do not assume that https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml is the Yoast sitemap. WordPress core, another SEO plugin, a dedicated sitemap plugin, a hosting platform, a CDN, or a physical server file may use that address. Running multiple sitemap generators can create conflicting responses or leave Google processing the wrong file. Yoast explains the difference in its documentation on XML sitemaps in Yoast SEO.

How do you enable Yoast XML sitemaps?

In current Yoast documentation, enable the feature from WordPress dashboard → Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features. Under Technical SEO, turn XML sitemaps on, then use View the XML sitemap to open the index.

  1. Log in to WordPress.
  2. Open Yoast SEO → Settings.
  3. Open Site features.
  4. Find XML sitemaps under Technical SEO.
  5. Turn the feature on and select View the XML sitemap.

Older Yoast versions may show the path as Yoast SEO → Settings → General → Site features. Yoast’s menu labels can change between versions, so search the Yoast settings for XML sitemaps or Site features if the path looks different.

What should you check first when a Yoast sitemap fails?

Use this order before editing server configuration or buying another SEO product:

  1. Open /sitemap_index.xml directly in a private browser window.
  2. Confirm that Yoast XML sitemaps are enabled.
  3. Open Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing the permalink structure.
  4. Purge the WordPress caching plugin, hosting or server cache, CDN cache, security cache, and browser cache.
  5. Disable competing sitemap generators and identify any physical sitemap files in the web root.
  6. Check Settings → General for the correct WordPress and Site Address URLs.
  7. Check whether the apparently missing content is noindex, redirected, canonicalized elsewhere, unpublished, or excluded by Yoast settings.
  8. Only then investigate Apache, NGINX, CDN, firewall, or custom-code behavior.

The symptom matters. A 404 points primarily toward routing or rewrite rules; an HTML response points toward the wrong URL, a redirect, a cache, or a security layer; an empty child sitemap may be entirely normal; and a stale response often indicates caching or custom filtering.

How do you fix a Yoast sitemap 404?

A Yoast sitemap 404 is often caused by disabled XML sitemaps or stale WordPress rewrite rules, but the fastest diagnostic is to compare the normal sitemap URL with Yoast’s dynamic fallback.

1. Save the permalink settings

Go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes. Do not change the selected permalink structure. Saving the screen refreshes WordPress rewrite rules and is one of Yoast’s recommended fixes for sitemap 404 errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the feature is enabled

Return to Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features and verify that XML sitemaps is on. Then test the index again.

3. Test the dynamic fallback

Open https://yourdomain.com/?sitemap=1. If the dynamic URL works while /sitemap_index.xml returns a 404, Yoast is generating a response but the pretty URL is not being routed correctly. The likely fault is an Apache or NGINX rewrite configuration, a subdirectory installation, multisite routing, or another server rule.

If both URLs fail, investigate Yoast activation, plugin or theme conflicts, PHP errors, server routing, physical files, and security controls before changing rewrite rules.

4. Check whether the requested child sitemap is empty

A child sitemap can return 404 when no eligible content exists for that post type or taxonomy. An unused taxonomy, empty archive, News sitemap with no qualifying recent articles, or Video sitemap with no qualifying videos does not necessarily indicate that the sitemap index is broken.

How do you repair Apache rewrite rules?

Apache uses .htaccess; the following is the example published by Yoast for routing its XML sitemap endpoints:

# Yoast SEO - XML Sitemap Rewrite Fix
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^sitemap_index.xml$ /index.php?sitemap=1 [L]
RewriteRule ^locations.kml$ /index.php?sitemap=wpseo_local_kml [L]
RewriteRule ^geo_sitemap.xml$ /index.php?sitemap=geo [L]
RewriteRule ^([^/]+?)-sitemap([0-9]+)?.xml$ /index.php?sitemap=$1&sitemap_n=$2 [L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)?-?sitemap.xsl$ /index.php?yoast-sitemap-xsl=$1 [L]
# END Yoast SEO - XML Sitemap Rewrite Fix

Do not paste these rules blindly. Back up .htaccess first, place the rules in the appropriate location before the main WordPress rewrite rules, and account for subdirectory installations, multisite, document roots, and existing rules. A syntax error can make the entire site inaccessible. Use Yoast’s Apache sitemap instructions and ask the host or server administrator for help when the server setup is unclear.

Do not overwrite the entire .htaccess file. Managed WordPress hosts may prevent direct edits and may require support to apply or roll back the change.

How do you repair Yoast sitemaps on NGINX?

NGINX does not use .htaccess. NGINX needs server-level location or rewrite configuration for the sitemap index, numbered child sitemaps, and XSL stylesheets; optional News SEO, Local SEO, and Video SEO endpoints may need additional rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no safe universal NGINX block for every WordPress installation. Subdirectory sites, multisite networks, reverse proxies, and host-specific configurations require different directives. Have the host or server administrator apply the configuration from Yoast’s NGINX sitemap guidance, test the configuration, and reload NGINX safely.

Why is the sitemap blank or empty?

“Blank” describes several different failures, and the raw response distinguishes them.

What you see Likely explanation First diagnostic
Completely white response Conflict, static-file override, broken XML, cache, XSL, or incorrect site URL Use View Source or fetch the raw response
XML header but no listed URLs No eligible content, excluded content type, specialty sitemap behavior, or filtering Check Yoast visibility and content eligibility
XML data exists but the display looks unattractive Browser stylesheet or presentation issue Inspect the source, not the visual styling

Yoast’s guidance on blank and empty sitemaps recommends separating a genuinely empty response from a stylesheet or display problem. A browser’s gray or visited-looking links do not mean Google sees invalid or inaccessible URLs; the raw XML is the relevant representation.

A News sitemap may contain only recently published qualifying news articles. Yoast’s documentation describes a two-day window for its News sitemap. A Video sitemap can be empty when Video SEO has not found qualifying videos. The missing XML tag guidance for News and Video sitemaps explains why specialty sitemap sections should not be judged like ordinary post or page sitemaps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Google say the Yoast sitemap is an HTML file?

Google’s “Unsupported format. Your file appears to be an HTML page” error means the submitted endpoint returned HTML instead of valid sitemap XML. The submitted URL may be wrong, redirected, cached, protected, or replaced by an error page.

  1. Confirm that the submitted address ends with sitemap_index.xml, not an assumed sitemap.xml.
  2. Open the URL while logged out or in a private browser window.
  3. Use View Source or a command-line request to inspect the raw response.
  4. Identify whether the HTML is a 404 page, login page, maintenance page, firewall challenge, PHP warning, or cache-generated page.
  5. Check redirects and confirm that HTTPS and the preferred hostname remain consistent.
  6. Purge WordPress, hosting, CDN, browser, and security caches.
  7. Exclude sitemap URLs from HTML-page caching, minification, optimization, and security transformations.
  8. Resubmit the index only after the direct response is valid XML.

Yoast specifically warns that submitting sitemap.xml instead of sitemap_index.xml can produce an HTML or unsupported-format error when another system owns the former URL. See Yoast’s HTML sitemap error guidance.

Why is the Yoast sitemap stale?

Yoast sitemaps are generated dynamically and normally update automatically when eligible content changes. A sitemap that appears stale usually reflects a cache, CDN, custom filter, or conflicting generator rather than a missing manual rebuild process.

  1. Purge the WordPress cache plugin.
  2. Purge hosting or reverse-proxy cache.
  3. Purge the CDN cache, including Cloudflare when used.
  4. Clear the browser cache or test with curl.
  5. Exclude sitemap URLs from page caching and HTML optimization.
  6. Temporarily disable suspected optimization or security features.
  7. Disable and re-enable Yoast XML sitemaps.
  8. Test for plugin and theme conflicts.
  9. Inspect custom Yoast filters in functions.php, a must-use plugin, or a custom plugin.

Yoast documents that sitemap transient caching was disabled by default as of Yoast SEO 9.0. The older filter wpseo_enable_xml_sitemap_transient_caching should therefore not be treated as a routine fix for current installations. Read Yoast’s sitemap update troubleshooting before using version-specific code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a physical sitemap file conflict with Yoast?

Yes. Yoast generates sitemaps dynamically, but a manually uploaded file such as /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, or /post-sitemap.xml can intercept a URL or serve outdated content.

Other possible generators include WordPress core, another SEO plugin, a dedicated sitemap plugin, a hosting platform, an SEO service, or a CDN. Choose one authoritative sitemap system. If Yoast is the chosen system, back up and then remove conflicting physical files and disable competing generation. Alternatively, disable Yoast’s sitemap feature and use the other system consistently. The important requirement is one reliable generator, not Yoast specifically. See Yoast’s physical-file conflict documentation.

How do WordPress URL settings affect sitemap URLs?

Yoast uses the WordPress site URLs when creating sitemap URLs, so incorrect protocol or hostname settings can produce HTTP, www, staging, or temporary-domain URLs.

Open Settings → General and review:

  • WordPress Address (URL)
  • Site Address (URL)
  • HTTP versus HTTPS
  • www versus non-www
  • Trailing-slash consistency
  • Staging or temporary-domain references
  • Multisite domain mapping

The sitemap should use the same preferred URL format as the live site. After a migration, back up the database before performing a carefully scoped search-and-replace for old URLs. Do not replace domains globally without checking serialized WordPress data and environment-specific values. Yoast covers URL-format and XML problems in its XML sitemap error documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a page missing from the sitemap?

A missing page is often intentionally excluded because the page is not a canonical, indexable URL that should appear in search results.

Check What it means
Individual noindex setting Search engines are told not to show the page, so exclusion can be correct.
Post type or taxonomy visibility The entire content type or archive may be excluded from search results.
Canonical URL The page identifies another URL as the preferred version.
Redirect The requested URL sends visitors to another address.
Publication status Draft, private, password-protected, or unpublished content is generally ineligible.
Custom plugin or filter Code may remove entries from the generated sitemap.
Child sitemap availability The relevant child sitemap may not exist when it has no qualifying content.

For an individual page, inspect the Yoast Advanced settings and confirm that search engines are allowed to show the page in search results. For an entire post type or taxonomy, inspect Yoast’s content and advanced settings. Yoast documents sitemap customization and inclusion logic in its sitemap index customization guide.

A smaller sitemap is not automatically broken. Google recommends including URLs the site wants shown in search results and generally prefers canonical URLs. Do not add redirected, duplicate, blocked, or intentionally noindex URLs merely to make the sitemap larger.

How do you fix malformed XML and declaration errors?

Errors such as “XML or text declaration not at start of entity” usually mean that unexpected bytes appeared before the XML declaration or that generated XML was modified after Yoast produced it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common sources include plugin output, theme output, PHP whitespace before <?php, blank lines after a closing PHP tag, PHP notices or warnings, custom filters, invalid characters, broken namespaces, and CDN or server transformations.

  1. Fetch the raw response rather than relying on the styled browser view.
  2. Look at the first bytes before the XML declaration.
  3. Remove PHP warnings, notices, whitespace, HTML, or debug output.
  4. Check that the document uses UTF-8, absolute URLs, correct namespaces, valid escaping, and properly closed tags.
  5. Test plugins and the theme on a staging copy or with a controlled conflict test.
  6. Inspect CDN, security, and optimization rules for response modification.

Google requires sitemap files to use UTF-8 encoding and absolute URLs. Validate the downloaded XML with an XML-aware editor or validator; a browser rendering a page does not prove that the raw response is valid. Yoast lists common declaration and namespace problems in its XML sitemap error guide.

Can robots.txt or a security layer block a valid sitemap?

Yes. A sitemap can be valid XML but still fail in Google Search Console if Googlebot cannot fetch it because of robots.txt, authentication, a firewall, bot protection, IP restrictions, rate limiting, or maintenance mode.

Open https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Disallow rule affecting the sitemap or its path.
  • A Sitemap: directive pointing to an obsolete or incorrect file.
  • CDN bot protection or browser challenges.
  • Authentication or IP restrictions.
  • Rate limits or maintenance-mode responses.

A robots.txt declaration can identify the sitemap, for example:

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

Robots.txt controls crawling; robots.txt is not a replacement for noindex. The immediate question is whether the sitemap itself is publicly accessible and whether the URLs listed in it can be crawled. Consult Google’s robots.txt guidance and its sitemap requirements.

How can you verify the sitemap technically?

Use a private browser window for a quick check, then inspect the raw response if anything looks wrong.

Browser verification

  1. Open https://yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml anonymously.
  2. Confirm that the response contains XML and links to child sitemaps.
  3. Open each relevant child sitemap.
  4. Use View Source when the displayed page looks blank, malformed, or unexpectedly styled.

Command-line verification

Shell access is optional; a host, developer, or browser-based tool can perform equivalent checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -I https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

Look for a successful status, an appropriate XML content type, and the absence of unexpected redirects, authentication, or firewall responses. Fetch the body with:

curl -L https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

To inspect the beginning of the response:

curl -Ls https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml | head

An HTML document, WordPress error page, security challenge, PHP warning, or other text before the XML declaration indicates that the endpoint is not returning a clean sitemap response. Check robots.txt with:

curl -Ls https://example.com/robots.txt

Size and structure checks

According to Google’s sitemap documentation, an individual sitemap can contain up to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs. Large sites must split URLs across multiple child sitemaps and use an index. Google documents that a sitemap index can contain up to 50,000 sitemap references and that a Search Console property can have up to 500 submitted sitemap index files in its large-sitemap guidance. These limits are edge cases for most WordPress sites, not the first explanation for an ordinary 404.

How do you resubmit the sitemap in Google Search Console?

Submit the Yoast sitemap index after the direct URL returns clean, accessible XML.

  5. Review the processing result.
  6. Open reported child-sitemap errors and test the affected child URL directly.
  7. Allow Google to recrawl after the technical repair.

Submitting the index is preferable to submitting every child sitemap individually. Google describes sitemap submission as a hint for crawling and discovery, not a guarantee of crawling, indexing, ranking, or immediate recrawling.

When should you choose another sitemap generator?

Yoast is a sensible primary generator when Yoast is already the site’s main SEO system and the site needs automatic management of eligible post types and taxonomies. WordPress core, another SEO plugin, a dedicated sitemap pipeline, or an enterprise hosting platform may be better when another system already controls SEO or when custom inclusion logic is easier to maintain outside Yoast.

Choose one authoritative sitemap system and document it. Do not disable WordPress core sitemaps or Yoast automatically just because both features exist; determine which URL is authoritative and ensure that competing systems do not serve conflicting files.

Premium Yoast is optional. Yoast Premium may be relevant for redirect management, broader SEO features, or premium support, but premium software does not automatically repair Apache or NGINX rewrites, CDN challenges, malformed third-party output, incorrect WordPress URLs, or physical sitemap conflicts. A normal sitemap 404 should first be investigated with the free settings, permalink, cache, and conflict checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you give a developer or host if the problem remains?

Provide enough evidence to distinguish a WordPress generation problem from a server delivery problem:

  • The exact sitemap index and failing child-sitemap URLs.
  • The HTTP status, redirects, and raw response.
  • The complete Search Console error.
  • WordPress, Yoast, PHP, and server versions when available.
  • The server type: Apache, NGINX, managed hosting, reverse proxy, or multisite.
  • The WordPress caching, CDN, firewall, and security setup.
  • Any recent migration, HTTPS change, hostname change, or staging-to-production move.
  • Whether ?sitemap=1 works.
  • Results from a plugin and theme conflict test.
  • Relevant server logs showing requests from Googlebot or other crawlers.

This evidence is more useful than simply reporting that “the sitemap is broken.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Yoast XML sitemap need to be indexed by Google?

No. A Yoast XML sitemap does not need to appear as an indexed search result for Google to read and process it. The sitemap only needs to be publicly accessible, valid XML, and submitted or declared correctly.

Why does Yoast leave some WordPress URLs out of the sitemap?

Yoast can omit URLs that are noindex, redirected, non-canonical, private, unpublished, excluded by content-type settings, or otherwise ineligible for search visibility. A sitemap is not a complete database export; it should generally contain canonical URLs intended for search results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does fixing a Yoast sitemap guarantee that Google will index my pages?

No. Google treats sitemap submission as a crawl and discovery hint, not a guarantee of crawling, indexing, ranking, or immediate recrawling. Internal links, page quality, canonicalization, robots directives, and other technical signals still affect indexing.

Should I submit sitemap.xml or sitemap_index.xml for Yoast SEO?

Submit the standard Yoast sitemap index at /sitemap_index.xml. The /sitemap.xml address may belong to WordPress core, another plugin, a hosting platform, or a physical file, so verify which system actually generates it before submitting it.

The Bottom Line

For most Yoast sitemap problems, start with /sitemap_index.xml, save permalinks, purge every cache layer, remove competing or physical sitemap files, and verify the site’s HTTPS and hostname settings. Then inspect content eligibility and the raw XML. Only edit Apache or NGINX rules when the dynamic ?sitemap=1 test proves that server routing is the problem. A valid sitemap improves discovery, but it does not guarantee indexing.
