EVOO Laptop: At First Glance

The EVOO laptop brand is one of the newest entries in the laptop market. The brand is owned by an American multinational retail corporation, Walmart.

Moreover, the brand mostly focuses on manufacturing gaming laptops. Thus, in a bid to expand its gaming laptop lineup, EVOO released the EVOO EG-LP6-BK in 2019.

This gaming laptop comes with loads of amazing specs that should offer nothing short of optimal performance. To mention a few, the laptop comes with a 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processor as well as a powerful NVIDIA GPU.

However, EVOO being a brand that isn’t particularly popular, might make people think twice about purchasing the EVOO EG-LP6-BK. Will this gaming laptop prove doubters wrong, or will it disappoint?

To find out, kindly read on!

EVOO Laptop: Design, Display, Ports, and Connectivity

Unlike most gaming laptops with flashy designs, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK features a simple and plain design with a glossy-black finish. Besides, the laptop’s body is made with a mix of brushed aluminum material and plastic material.

Specifically, the lid of the laptop is made of aluminum, while the deck/base is made of plastic. Focusing more on the lid, it features a white “EVOO” logo at the center that gives the laptop a bit of elegance.

However, the bar hinge that attaches the lid to the base isn’t tight enough and solid. Hence, the lid flexes and wobbles at the slightest touch.

Also, when the lid wobbles, it makes some creaking and annoying sounds. To complicate the situation, the lid attracts fingerprints and smudges easily due to its glossy surface.

On a positive note, due to the not-so-tight hinge, you can easily open the lid with one hand. Moreover, when you finally open the lid, you will be greeted by the EVOO EG-LP6-BK’s gorgeously huge 17.3-inch display.

This display offers an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution that makes it deliver colorful and sharp picture quality. However, the display’s picture quality cannot be compared or even compete with displays that feature 4K UHD resolution.

This is because a 4K UHD display has roughly two times the amount of pixels found on an FHD display. Moreover, the more pixels, the sharper the picture quality of a display.

Nonetheless, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK’s display is made with an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel. Due to this panel, the display offers wide viewing angles.

Thus, there should be no loss in picture quality or color accuracy when watching the display off-center. To make things better, this laptop’s display features a matte coating on its surface.

This matte coating reduces sun glares and reflection when the display is used in bright areas or direct sunlight. That’s not all; the coating also reduces eyestrain when you stare at the display for a long period of time.

That aside, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK features narrow plastic bezels that surround its 17.3-inch display. The top bezel harbors the laptop’s 1 MP webcam with an integrated microphone at the center.

Performance-wise, this webcam is very good for video conference calls. However, it isn’t ideal for taking selfies or groupies as it delivers grainy and blurry images.

Moving on to the deck, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK features a mechanical backlit QWERTY keyboard. This keyboard has well-spaced keys with decent key travel and feedback.

Hence, it should offer a comfortable typing experience. Besides, the backlit feature of the keyboard makes it ideal for usage in dark environments.

However, the keys on the keyboard make a noise when pressed. By the way, key travel is the distance between a key’s resting position to full depression.

Interestingly, on the right side above the keyboard, there is a dedicated button for toggling between different power modes. These power modes include high-performance mode, balanced mode, and power saver mode.

In addition to this dedicated button, you will find an “EVOO” inscription on the left side above the laptop’s keyboard. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the EVOO EG-LP6-BK’s keyboard, you will see a spacious touchpad with two integrated click buttons.

The surface of this touchpad is very smooth and sensitive. Thus, it responds to touches and inputs accurately.

As a result, making navigation and finger gliding very seamless. Apart from its smooth surface, this laptop’s touchpad also supports Windows 10 multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom.

Moving on to the EVOO EG-LP6-BK’s sides, the front side has sharp and tapered edges. Also, there are status indicators in the center of this laptop’s front side.

However, the laptop’s rear features two vents that push out hot air and heat from the laptop. Hence, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK shouldn’t overheat too much under intensive gaming sessions.

Aside from these vents, there are also two mini display ports, an HDMI port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, and a power connector on the laptop’s rear. Meanwhile, the left side of the EVOO EG-LP6-BK has a Kensington lock, microphone jack, USB 2.0 port, headphone jack, and an Ethernet port.

Likewise, the right side of this laptop houses a media card reader and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. In terms of wireless connectivity, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 and integrated 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

For weight and dimension, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK weighs 2902.9 g and measures 279.4 x 381 x 38.1 mm (W x D x H). With this amount of weight and measurement, it is quite obvious that the laptop is heavy and bulky.

However, it was actually expected due to the fact that the laptop is a 17.3-inch laptop. Hence, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK is not the kind of gaming laptop you can carry around with ease.

Nevertheless, the laptop is lighter than most of the 17.3-inch laptops in its category. For example, the Dell G7 17 weighs 3140 g and measures 404 x 295.8 x 25 mm (W x D x H).

All things considered, I will rate the EVOO EG-LP6-BK an eight out of ten in this EVOO Laptop design review section.

EVOO Laptop: Processor (CPU) Performance

The EVOO EG-LP6-BK comes with a high-end 9th generation processor, Intel Core i7-9750H. This CPU is a 6-core processor, and it has an outstanding cache memory of 12 MB.

For processing speed, the processor operates at a base frequency of 2.60 MHz and a maximum frequency of 4.50 GHz. Moreover, due to the outstanding specs of this processor, it is powerful enough to carry out any computing task.

Hence, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK should be able to run most high-end games and applications with ease. Also, the laptop should be able to multitask without issues.

To further verify this laptop’s processor performance, I will discuss its result on a Cinebench R15 test. In case you are wondering, the Cinebench R15 test is a benchmark test that evaluates the performance of a computer’s processor by putting its cores through intensive workloads.

Hence, this app-based benchmark test involves two tests which are the single-core test and the multi-core test. While the single-core test measures the processor’s performance when one of its cores is in use, the multi-core test does the opposite.

Specifically, the Cinebench R15 multi-core test evaluates the processor’s performance when all of its cores are put to use. Besides, the higher the scores on the Cinebench R15 test, the better the performance of the computer’s processor.

So, based on the results obtained from the test, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK recorded 181 points on the single-core test. Meanwhile, the laptop recorded 1285 points on the multi-core test.

These scores are very impressive and surpass the scores achieved by one of the laptop’s closest competitors, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX504. Precisely, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 scored 170 points on the Cinebench R15 single-core test.

Also, it scored 609 points on the multi-core test. It is worth mentioning that the ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 uses an Intel Core i7-8750H processor.

In conclusion, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK features a very powerful processor that is able to handle most high-end games. Also, the laptop outperformed one of its major rivals on a processor benchmark test.

Hence, I will rate the EVOO EG-LP6-BK a nine out of ten in this EVOO Laptop processor performance review section.

EVOO Laptop: Memory (RAM) Performance

To start with, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK is equipped with a standard memory of 16 GB DDR4 2666 MHz RAM. Furthermore, this laptop features two memory slots and supports a maximum memory of 32 GB.

Hence, you should be able to upgrade the laptop’s standard memory up to 32 GB. However, that might not be necessary because the standard 16 GB RAM is enough for the laptop to seamlessly handle most high-end games.

Also, with this amount of memory, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK should be able to handle any task that comes its way, including multitasking. Speaking of which, with 16 GB RAM, when 25+ Chrome tabs are running simultaneously on the laptop, it shouldn’t lag or slow down a bit.

As a matter of fact, switching between these Chrome tabs should be very fluid and seamless for the laptop. Let us quickly discuss the EVOO EG-LP6-BK’s result on a PCMark 10 test to see how effective it can be with 16 GB RAM.

In brief, PCMark 10 is an app-based benchmark test that evaluates a computer’s memory performance by simulating real-world tasks. Furthermore, according to this app-based test, a high score means good memory performance.

Hence, based on the test result, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK recorded a score of 5797 points. When compared with the ASUS TUF Gaming FX504, this laptop performed better with over 1500 points.

To be more precise, on the PCMark 10 test, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX504 delivered a score of 3946 points.

Finally, I will rate the EVOO EG-LP6-BK a nine out of ten in this EVOO Laptop memory performance review section.

EVOO Laptop: Storage Options and Performance

The EVOO EG-LP6-BK features a SATA SSD and supports a maximum storage capacity of 1 TB. Sincerely speaking, a maximum storage capacity of 1 TB should be sufficient for most users to save multimedia files.

However, since this EVOO laptop is a gaming laptop, I believe this amount of maximum storage space is limited. This is because there are several high-end games that require more than 200 GB of storage space before installation.

An example of such a game is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Hence, installing about 4 of such video game will make the EVOO EG-LP6-BK surely run out of storage space.

Thankfully, the laptop features a 2-in-1 card reader for storage expansion. Besides, you can consider buying an external storage drive if you need more storage space.

That said, to know how well the EVOO EG-LP6-BK can perform with its SATA SSD, let us consider its CrystalDiskMark test result. If you don’t know, the CrystalDiskMark test is a benchmark test that evaluates the read and write speed of a computer’s storage drive.

In case you are wondering, read speed is the time that it takes a storage drive to open a file. On the other hand, write speed is the time it takes for the storage drive to save a file.

Moreover, a high “MBps” value on the CrystalDiskMark test implies fast read and write speed. Therefore, according to the test result, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK recorded a read and write speed of 1038 MBps and 1604 MBps, respectively.

Although this read and write speed is fast, it isn’t up to that of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX531, which also uses SSD. Specifically, on the CrystalDiskMark test, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX531 recorded a read and write speed of 1238.57 MBps and 1920.07 MBps, respectively.

In conclusion, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK features a decently-fast SATA SSD with limited maximum storage capacity. Furthermore, this laptop comes with a 2-in-1 card reader for storage expansion.

All things considered, I will rate the EVOO EG-LP6-BK an eight out of ten in this EVOO Laptop storage options and performance review section.

EVOO Laptop: Graphics Card Performance

The EVOO EG-LP6-BK comes with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card. This graphics card operates on a base and boost frequency of 960 MHz and 1200 MHz, respectively.

Moreover, being a dedicated graphics card, this GPU features a dedicated VRAM of 6 GB GDDR6. Hence, with this GPU, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK should be able to seamlessly perform graphics-demanding tasks like video editing.

Also, the laptop should be able to smoothly play most title AAA games. For example, while playing Resident Evil Village 2021 in ultra-high graphics settings, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK delivered an outstanding 93.2 fps (frame per second).

To further verify the laptop’s graphics performance, I will be sharing its result on a 3DMark 11 test. For clarity, the 3DMark 11 test is a benchmark test that evaluates the 3D and 2D rendering capabilities of a computer’s graphics card.

Moreover, as with other benchmark tests in this article, a high score on this graphics benchmark test equates to good performance. Therefore, according to the result obtained from the test, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK recorded 19567 points.

Even though this score is decent, it is below the category average of 21459 points. Also, the laptop’s score is lesser than that of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX531, which uses an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q.

To be more specific, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX531 recorded 21237 points on the same 3DMark 11 test.

Hence, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK deserves nothing more than an eight out of ten rating in this EVOO Laptop review section.

EVOO Laptop: Battery Life and Performance

The EVOO EG-LP6-BK comes with a 3-cell 46 WHr Lithium-Ion battery. Although EVOO didn’t state the laptop’s battery life, I will consider the laptop’s result on a battery rundown test to find out.

In case you are curious, this battery rundown test involves continuously surfing the web on the laptop via a Wi-Fi connection till it dies. Also, the brightness level of the laptop’s display will be set to 50% on this test.

Hence, at the end of the battery rundown test, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK delivered a battery life of just 4 hours and 9 minutes. Even though this battery life is somewhat inadequate, it was actually expected.

This is because most gaming laptop nowadays suffers from the same problem, which is poor battery life. Moreover, compared to some gaming laptops, such as the Lenovo Legion Y740 15 Inch, the EVOO EG-LP6-BK has longer battery life.

To be more specific, on the same battery rundown test, the Lenovo Legion Y740 15 Inch delivered a battery life of 2 hours and 16 minutes.

In conclusion, even though the EVOO EG-LP6-BK’s battery life isn’t particularly good, it is better than some gaming laptops out there. Thus, to conclude this EVOO Laptop battery life and performance review section, I will rate the EVOO EG-LP6-BK a seven out of ten.
