ASUS 752: At First Glance

ASUS, an all-time laptop manufacturer, has become one of the major pacesetters in the world of gaming laptops. This is because they have found a way to provide a perfect mix of build and performance for gaming laptops.

A typical example of such a gaming laptop with this perfect mixture is the ASUS 752. Specifically, this laptop offers a solid build quality and exceptional specs to carry out all your gaming needs.

However, laptops of a such caliber usually come at a high price, and this ASUS laptop is no exception. Speaking of which, as of April 2022 (when I published this review), the ASUS 752 had a starting price of $1,999.99 – expensive, right?

Now the question here is, can the performance of this laptop measure up to its expensive price tag? One way to find an answer to that question is by reading this review article all the way through.

Thus, kindly continue reading.

ASUS 752: Design, Dimension, and Weight

In terms of design, it is a known fact that gaming laptops usually come with a distinctive design style. Therefore, by merely looking at them, you can tell right away that they are meant for gaming.

Thankfully, the ASUS 752 follows this unique design style. To give more details, the laptop comes with a flashy and eye-catchy design.

Moreover, the stylish mix of black and burnt orange on the body of the laptop gives it away from a distance. Although this color mix negates the usual red and black we mostly see on gaming laptops, it still looks appealing and beautiful.

To add to its beauty, ASUS included a ROG (Republic Of Gamers) logo that illuminates faintly on the center of the laptop’s lid. Moreover, this logo is nicely framed by orange-colored grills on both sides.

Like the logo itself, these grills also illuminate, thereby, adding more elegance to the lid’s surface. Asides from its overall eye-catchy and flashy look, the ASUS 752 is also bold and sturdy.

This is mainly because the laptop is made of solid aluminum material on its exterior and rock-solid plastic material on its interior. Besides, the laptop also features a robust aluminum hinge that connects the lid and base together.

Due to the robustness of this aluminum hinge, the lid stands firmly when opened and wobbles slightly when nudged. Overall, the build quality of the ASUS 752 is very impressive.

As a matter of fact, the laptop passed various MIL-STD 810G tests. For clarity, the MIL-STD 810G tests are tests used to measure the durability of military-grade weapons.

Thus, having passed these tests, the ASUS 752 is durable enough to withstand rough handling including vibrations and extreme weather conditions.

Moving on to the interior, opening the laptop’s lid reveals a massive 17.3-inch display. This 17.3-inch display offers an impressive FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution that allows it to deliver fantastic picture quality for a pleasing gaming experience.

Moreover, the display is made with an IPS panel that makes it offers wide viewing angles. Hence, you can watch the ASUS 752’s display from the sides or off-center without noticing any reduction in picture quality.

Aside from the IPS panel, this laptop’s display also features an anti-glare coating that helps reduce reflections in well-lit areas. Therefore, using this ASUS laptop outdoors or near an open window should be less bothersome.

On the downside, the ASUS 752’s display is surrounded by thick bezels that may cause some distractions during intensive gaming periods. Nevertheless, at the bottom bezel, you will see a beautiful “ASUS” inscription boldly printed.

The top bezel, on the other hand, houses an HD webcam. Performance-wise, this webcam isn’t so impressive for selfies, as images come out grainy and blurry.

However, it delivers decent performance for video conference calls and regular skyping with friends and family.

Coming down to the base, the ASUS 752 features a stunning backlight standard keyboard. Due to the backlight feature, using the keyboard to type in dim areas or at night should not be a problem.

Besides, the keys on the keyboard are sufficiently large, and the gaps between each key are sufficient. Also, the keyboard offers adequate key travel, and the keys require minimal pressure to register inputs.

Hence, typing and gaming activities should be generally satisfying with this keyboard. Just in case you are wondering, key travel is the distance between a key’s resting point to full depression.

Overall, the ASUS 752’s keyboard is flawless and impressive; you will not notice any clattering or flex while typing. In fact, ASUS claims that the keyboard is capable of registering and processing up to 30 inputs simultaneously.

Impressively, ASUS included five small buttons, including a quick-select button at the top of this laptop’s keyboard. These buttons are linked to software called the XSplit Gamecaster.

In case you are wondering, the XSplit Gamecaster is a live streaming and recording software that enables you to record and broadcast games and live events. Hence, if you are a Twitch streamer, I believe the ASUS 752 is the best for you.

That said, below the ASUS 752’s keyboard, you will see a mid-sized touchpad with dedicated click buttons. Performance-wise, this touchpad offers a smooth surface that is very responsive and accurate, making navigation seamless.

Also, the touchpad supports Windows 10 multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and two-finger scrolling. Besides, the dedicated click buttons underneath the touchpad are clicky and offer the right amount of key travel.

When it comes to ports and connectivity, the ASUS G752 comes fully equipped on both sides. To be more specific, on the right side, the laptop features two audio ports, a line-in, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, and two USB 3.0 ports.

That’s not all; you will also find a mini-display port, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and an AC power port on the right side. Meanwhile, the laptop’s left side features a Kensington lock, a USB 3.0 port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a DVD drive, and an SD card reader.

In terms of size and weight, the ASUS G752 is quite big and intimidating. Specifically, the laptop measures 428 x 333 x 23.00 mm (W x D x H) and weighs a massive 4300 g.

Obviously, this is not a laptop you’ll be casually throwing in your backpack on your way out with friends. Also, when compared to some of its closest competitors, this laptop weighs more.

For example, the Schenker XMG A706 weighs 3090 g and measures 413 x 285 x 31.9 mm (W x D x H).

In a nutshell, the ASUS 752 offers a solid and rugged build alongside a good amount of design perks. Also, this gaming laptop offers a good number of ports and an impressive FHD IPS panel display.

However, the laptop is very heavy. Therefore, I will rate the ASUS 752 an eight out of ten in this design review section.

ASUS 752: Processor (CPU) Performance

For processing data, the ASUS 752 employs a quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor with 6 MB cache memory. This CPU offers a base frequency of 2.60 GHz and a maximum frequency of 3.50 GHz.

In terms of performance, the Intel Core i7-6700HQ is a high-end power-efficient processor. As a result, it delivers fast and impressive performance while consuming less power.

Therefore, with this CPU, the ASUS 752 should be able to handle anything you throw at it without issues. Basically, from simple operations to demanding tasks like hardcore gaming, this laptop should deliver nothing short of excellent performance.

As a means of proving the laptop’s processing abilities, let us quickly discuss its Cinebench R15 test results. In brief, Cinebench R15 is a cross-platform benchmark test that checks how well your computer’s processor roars when carrying out heavy workloads.

Practically, it does this by putting the processor’s cores through a series of tasks. Therefore, the Cinebench R15 involves two tests – the single-core test and the multi-core test.

For clarity, the single-core test measures the performance of the processor when only one of its cores is in use. Meanwhile, the multi-core test evaluates the overall performance of the processor when all its cores are in use (four in this case).

Moreover, a high score on this test shows that the processor delivers good performance. So, based on the Cinebench R15 test, the ASUS 752 scored 150 points and 677 points on the single-core test and multi-core test, respectively.

In comparison, this ASUS laptop surpassed most of its counterparts. For instance, the Schenker XMG A706, which also uses an Intel Core i7-6700HQ, scored 149 points on the single-core test and 619 points on the multi-core test.

In summary, the ASUS 752 offers a powerful high-end processor that can deliver remarkable performance for everyday tasks and gaming. Also, the laptop outperformed most of its rivals on a CPU benchmark test.

Therefore, the ASUS 752 deserves a rating of nine out of ten in this processor review section.

ASUS 752: Memory (RAM) Performance

For memory, the ASUS 752 comes with two memory slots and a DDR4 SDRAM memory type. On one of its memory slots, this laptop features a standard memory of 16 GB.

Also, the ASUS 752 supports a maximum memory capacity of 64 GB RAM, which is really impressive. Thus, with the help of the second memory slot, you should be able to upgrade the laptop’s overall memory to a maximum of 64 GB RAM.

However, who needs an upgrade when the laptop’s standard memory of 16 GB is enough to fluidly run most high-end games? Also, this amount of memory is sufficient for the laptop to smoothly carry out intensive workloads like heavy multitasking.

Speaking of which, with 16 GB RAM, the ASUS 752 should be able to open 20 Chrome browser tabs without breaking a sweat. Moreover, the laptop should also be able to stream videos on YouTube and Netflix simultaneously while these browser tabs are running.

That’s not all; switching between the tabs and streaming videos should be completely hitch-free for the laptop. Having said that, I will now share the result of the ASUS 752 on the PCMark 10 test to further prove its performance.

Briefly, PCMark 10 is a benchmark tool that estimates the memory performance of a computer by simulating everyday computing operations. Furthermore, based on the setting of the benchmark tool, a higher score is better.

So, according to the PCMark 10 test results, the ASUS 752 scored 5599 points. Comparatively, this laptop performed better than the Acer Predator Triton 700.

To be more precise, the Acer Predator Triton 700 scored 5277 points on the same test.

Based on the facts above, I will rate the ASUS 752 a nine out of ten in this memory review section.

ASUS 752: Storage Options and Performance

Coming down to storage, the ASUS 752 features an HDD (Hard Disk Drive). Furthermore, the laptop supports a maximum storage capacity of 1 TB HDD.

Generally, 1 TB of storage capacity should be enough for regular or professional users to save files and applications. However, for hardcore or competitive gamers, this storage capacity is limited.

This is because most modern games require a large amount of storage space before installation. An example is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which requires 175 GB of storage space before installation.

Thus, if you have to install about five of such games, you will eventually run out of storage space. Gladly, the ASUS 752 comes with a 2-in-1 card reader for storage expansion.

Besides, if you still need more storage space apart from that, you can simply purchase an external hard drive. Apparently, that would attract an additional cost.

Having said all that, let us quickly evaluate the laptop’s storage performance on a CrystalDiskMark 3.0 test. CrystalDiskMark 3.0 is a benchmark test that estimates the read and write speed of a computer’s storage drive in order to determine its performance.

For better understanding, the read and write speed simply means the time it takes a storage drive to open and save files, respectively. Besides, a high “MBps” value on the CrystalDiskMark 3.0 test indicates a fast read and write speed.

Therefore, based on the test results, the ASUS 752 has a sequential read speed of 144 MBps. Also, the laptop features a sequential write speed of 134 MBps.

In comparison, the Lenovo Ideapad Y700 17ISK 80Q0, which also uses HDD storage, offered a slower read and write speed. Precisely, the Lenovo Ideapad Y700 17ISK 80Q0 has a sequential read speed of 121.0 MBps and a sequential write speed of 118.1 MBps.

All in all, I will rate the ASUS 752 an eight out of ten in this storage review section.

ASUS 752: Graphics Card Performance

For graphics-related tasks and gaming, the ASUS 752 employs a powerful dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics card. In terms of speed, this GPU offers a base frequency of 1038 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1127 MHz.

Furthermore, as a dedicated graphics card, the GPU features a whopping 8 GB GDDR5 VRAM. Therefore, with this graphics card, the ASUS 752 should be able to effectively handle graphics-demanding tasks and title AAA games.

Speaking of games, the ASUS 752 should deliver a frame rate of 65.1 fps while playing Apex Legends. Also, while playing Far Cry New Dawn, this laptop should be able to deliver a frame rate of 60 fps.

That said, let us now discuss the laptop’s performance on the 3DMark 11 test. In case you are wondering what the 3DMark 11 test does, it measures the graphics rendering and gaming abilities of a computer’s graphics card.

Also, a high score on this test means that the computer’s GPU performs well. So, according to the 3DMark 11 test results, the ASUS 752 scored 13581 points.

Comparatively, this ASUS laptop performed better than most of its rivals. For example, the Acer Predator 15 G9-591-74ZV, which also uses an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics card, scored 12238 points.

In conclusion, the ASUS features an outstanding GPU that delivers great gaming and graphics rendering performance. Moreover, the laptop surpassed most of its competitors on a GPU benchmark test.

Hence, the ASUS 752 deserves a rating of nine out of ten in this graphics review section.

ASUS 752: Battery Life and Performance

For battery, the ASUS 752 comes with an 8-cell 6000 mAh battery. According to ASUS, this laptop should last around 4 hours with this battery.

In my opinion, 4 hours of battery life is not impressive at all and won’t be enough for most users. Besides, ASUS’ claim might not be particularly true.

Hence, to find out the actual battery life of the laptop, I will now share its battery rundown test result. Briefly, this battery rundown test involves setting the laptop’s brightness to 50% and surfing the web continuously via a WIFI network until the laptop dies.

Thus, at the end of this test, the ASUS 752 delivered a battery life of 4 hours and 1 minute. Although this battery life is on par with ASUS’ claim, it still isn’t impressive and shorter than most of its competitors.

For example, the Lenovo Ideapad Y700 17ISK 80Q0 delivered a battery life of 5 hours and 34 minutes on the same battery rundown test.

Therefore, to conclude this battery review section, I will rate the ASUS 752 a seven out of ten.
