Overall
3.9

  • Thin and light form factor
  • Powerful performance

Cons

  • Weak speaker sound
  • Average gaming performance

Acer Spin 5: At First Glance

In accordance with the modern technology trend, the Acer Spin 5 is very slim and light. Its form factor is more impressive when you consider its hardware specs.

Speaking of its form factor, the Acer Spin 5’s appearance is a bit different from the regular laptop. The major contributing factor to its different appearance is the 3:2 square display that makes it look like a real notebook.

Overall, Acer seemed to have seriously considered mobility and performance power when it was designing this laptop.

Acer Spin 5: Design, Dimension, and Weight

Just by looking at the Acer Spin 5, you can deduce that it is a slim and compact laptop. The moment you pick this laptop up, you will be shocked by how light it is.

In fact, the Acer Spin 5 is so light that you will think it is missing some features. It weighs 1202 g and measures 299.7 x 236.22 x 14.9 mm.

Comparatively, the Acer Spin 5 weighs almost the same as the 12-inch MacBook. But it weighs less than the Dell XPS 13 and the HP Envy x360. The Acer Spin 5 is also lighter than its previous 2017 Swift 5 model.

Moreover, the Acer Spin 5 is not only lighter than the previous 2017 model, but it also comes in a finer design.

The Acer Spin 5 has a very cool design. To give you an idea about how cool the design is, its looks like a blend of the Acer Swift 3 and the Acer Aspire 15.

Furthermore, the Acer Spin 5 is made of a magnesium alloy material. Therefore, it has a very nice metal feel to it.

However, the Acer Spin 5 tends to feel a bit like plastic when it gets heated up. Nonetheless, it has a very solid build.

The laptop’s hinge is also very sturdy. It allows the Acer Spin 5 to be used in a tent mode, stand mode, tablet mode, or the traditional laptop mode.

Furthermore, the Acer Spin 5 has a good keyboard that feels comfortable for typing. However, its keys are relatively small sized.

Below the keyboard is a decent trackpad that accommodates a fingerprint sensor at its top left corner.

In terms of ports, the Acer Spin 5 offers 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports, 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C ports, and 1 x HDMI port. You also get 2 x Type-C Thunderbolts and a headphone jack.

Overall, this laptop has a very solid build and a good design. Hence, it scores an eight in this review.

Acer Spin 5: Processor (CPU) Performance

Acer equipped the Acer Spin 5 with a quad-core Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor. This 10th generation Intel i7 processor has a base frequency of 1.30 GHz and a maximum frequency of 3.90 GHz.

The Acer Spin 5 is very powerful thanks to this Core i7-1065G7. Moreover, the Acer Spin 5 can handle both light and heavy computing operations.

On a Geekbench 5 performance test, the Acer Spin 5 scored 4,290. It exceeded the average premium laptop score of 4,041.

Furthermore, the Acer Spin 5 surpassed the Lenovo Yoga C940’s 4,055 score. The HP Spectre x360 13 couldn’t surpass this laptop’s score as well – it scored 4,074.

Therefore, the Acer Spin 5 scores an eight in this CPU review for its good performance.

Acer Spin 5: Memory (RAM) Performance

Acer ships this laptop with a 16 GB LPDDR4X RAM. Unfortunately, this laptop has just 1 memory slot that supports a maximum memory size of 1 GB.

The Acer Spin 5 proved to be a multitasking king during the various RAM performance tests. It was able to manage apps like Google Chrome and Adobe Premiere simultaneously.

To offer you some details, this laptop ran smoothly with 36 Chrome browser tabs. Even while I was editing documents online, the Acer Spin 5 didn’t stutter.

In addition to that, I started running Adobe Premiere simultaneously in the background. To my surprise, the Acer Spin 5 kept running smoothly.

Hence, it scores a nine in this RAM review for its awesome multitasking power.

Acer Spin 5: Storage Options and Performance

Acer offers a 512 GB SSD for the Acer Spin 5’s storage. You also get a microSD card reader for storage expansion.

The Acer Spin 5 offers impressive storage speeds. On a CrystalDiskMark test, it recorded a sequential read speed of 1716 MBps and a sequential write speed of 1527 MBps.

Moving on to the file transfer test, this laptop took 8 seconds to copy a 4.97 GB mixed media file. It copied the file at a rate of 678 MBps.

In comparison, the Acer Spin 5’s copy rate was much faster than the 147 MBps category average copy rate. It also outpaced the Spectre x360 13 that recorded a copy rate of 339 MBps.

However, the Acer Spin 5 was unable to outmatch the Yoga C940’s 1018 MBps copy rate.

In conclusion, the Acer Spin 5 scores a seven in this review for its above-average storage speed.

Acer Spin 5: Graphics Card Performance

The Acer Spin 5 features an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics card. This GPU has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1100 MHz.

In terms of graphics, this GPU ought to provide balanced multimedia capabilities. Therefore, light gaming is very possible with the Acer Spin 5.

Unfortunately, you can hardly play most graphically intensive games in medium to low settings. However, you can play less demanding games in medium settings.

To offer you some of its gaming performances, Acer Spin 5 played Dirt 3 at 65 FPS. Meanwhile, it played The Witcher at 47 FPS, Far Cry at 30 FPS, and Battlefield V at 25 FPS – all on low settings.

In conclusion, the Acer Spin 5 scores a six in this review for its below-average gaming performance.

Acer Spin 5: Battery Life and Performance

Acer equipped Acer Spin 5 is with a 4-Cell Li-ion battery. The manufacturer claims that this laptop can last up to 15 hours.

However, the Acer Spin 5 lasted 9 hours 10 minutes on a battery life test. The test involved continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi with medium screen brightness.

Unfortunately, this laptop’s battery life is shorter than the average premium laptop battery life of 9 hours 33 minutes.

Also, the Acer Spin 5 performed lower than some of its competitors. For example, both Yoga C940 and the HP Spectre x360 13 lasted longer than Acer Spin 5 with battery runtimes of 11 hours 50 minutes and 13 hours 20 minutes respectively.

Nonetheless, the Acer Spin 5 scores an eight in this review for its excellent battery life.
