Yoast SEO XML sitemaps automatically create a sitemap index at /sitemap_index.xml when the feature is enabled. The index links to child sitemaps for eligible posts, pages, taxonomies, authors, and custom post types. A sitemap improves discovery and crawl support, but it does not guarantee indexing, rankings, or inclusion of every listed URL.

For most WordPress sites, the practical goal is simple: maintain one authoritative sitemap system, include only valuable canonical URLs that should be indexable, make the sitemap publicly accessible, and submit the sitemap index to Google Search Console. Yoast’s free plugin normally provides everything needed for that basic job.

Key takeaways

  • Yoast normally generates its sitemap index at https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml, while WordPress core normally uses /wp-sitemap.xml from WordPress 5.5 onward.
  • A sitemap should contain public, canonical, status-200 URLs that are valuable enough to index; adding every database URL is not an optimization.
  • Google permits up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per sitemap, while Yoast commonly groups up to 1,000 URLs per child sitemap as a product implementation choice.
  • The sitemap’s own noindex, follow response header is normal and does not prevent search engines from reading the URLs inside it.
  • Yoast Premium is not required to create or submit a normal XML sitemap; free Yoast or WordPress core is sufficient for many small and ordinary sites.

What is an XML sitemap, and what does a Yoast sitemap index do?

An XML sitemap is a machine-readable list of URLs, with optional metadata such as modification information. A sitemap index is a directory of separate sitemap files, called child sitemaps, rather than a list containing every URL itself.

Yoast’s normal structure looks like this:

/sitemap_index.xml
    /post-sitemap.xml
    /page-sitemap.xml
    /author-sitemap.xml
    /category-sitemap.xml
    /post_tag-sitemap.xml
    /custom-post-type-sitemap.xml

The exact child files depend on the site’s public post types, taxonomies, search-appearance settings, eligible content, installed Yoast extensions, and custom integrations. Yoast’s XML sitemap functional specification describes the index-and-child-sitemap architecture.

A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs and can support more efficient crawling, especially on large, new, poorly linked, or media-heavy sites. Google explains what sitemaps do as a discovery and crawling aid—not as a guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or rank every URL.

A sitemap does not replace internal links, a correct robots.txt file, canonical tags, appropriate noindex directives, reliable hosting, or useful content. Google may ignore a submitted URL when the URL is blocked, redirected, non-canonical, unavailable, low quality, or otherwise unsuitable for indexing.

How does Yoast SEO generate XML sitemaps?

Yoast generates the sitemap index dynamically when XML sitemaps are enabled. As eligible content is published, changed, or removed, Yoast updates the index and the relevant child sitemap rather than asking editors to maintain XML files manually.

Yoast generally excludes content marked noindex and excludes content types that are configured not to appear in search results. The intended relationship is straightforward: content that is eligible for indexing should be considered for the sitemap, while content deliberately excluded from search should normally not be recommended through the sitemap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That relationship can be affected by custom post-type registration, filters, caching, competing plugins, and unusual integrations. A sitemap containing an unexpected URL should therefore be investigated rather than assumed to be correct or incorrect from its presence alone.

Why does a sitemap look like a webpage in a browser?

A Yoast sitemap may display with headings, colors, and clickable links because Yoast applies an XSL stylesheet for human-friendly presentation. The underlying response remains XML data. A styled sitemap is not an HTML sitemap, and removing the stylesheet is not normally necessary for search engines.

Yoast also sends an X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow header for sitemap responses. The Yoast sitemap documentation and its developer specification identify this behavior as normal. The sitemap file itself does not need to appear as a search result; the URLs inside it are the objects intended for discovery.

How do you enable and find a Yoast XML sitemap?

In current Yoast SEO interfaces, enable and open the sitemap through the following path:

  1. Log in to WordPress.
  2. Go to Yoast SEO → Settings.
  3. Open Site features.
  4. Under Technical SEO, find XML sitemaps.
  5. Turn the feature On.
  6. Select View the XML sitemap.

Yoast has changed menu labels over time. Older releases may place the option under a general Features screen. If the exact path is absent, use the settings search, confirm that Yoast SEO is active, and check the version-specific Yoast documentation at Yoast’s XML sitemap help page.

The direct URL is normally:

https://yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml

A healthy response normally contains an XML document or a browser-styled sitemap index, one or more child-sitemap links, and an HTTP 200 response. The response should not require a login or replace XML with a hosting error page, security challenge, or redirect loop.

How do you test whether the sitemap works?

Replace the domain in these commands with the actual site domain:

curl -I https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml
curl -L https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

Check the final response and the contents. A normal result is usually 200 OK with XML-compatible content. Investigate an unexpected 403, 404, 429, 500, authentication request, bot challenge, or redirect chain.

Do not treat X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow as a failure. That header applies to the sitemap document, not to the indexability of each URL listed in the document.

For a basic local syntax check, save the response and run:

xmllint --noout sitemap_index.xml
xmllint --noout post-sitemap.xml

xmllint verifies that the XML is well formed. It does not verify that every URL is canonical, returns 200, is indexable, or will be accepted by Google.

What belongs in a Yoast sitemap?

The best inclusion rule is: list URLs that are public, canonical, reachable, valuable, and intended for indexing. A sitemap should represent the site’s preferred indexable URL set, not every URL generated by WordPress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Usually include Usually exclude Reason
Important pages Staging, preview, test, or development pages Only production URLs intended for search should be recommended.
Published, useful posts Private, deleted, expired, or redirected URLs Search engines need a live preferred destination.
Indexable products Thin filter combinations and internal search results Low-value URL variations can dilute the useful URL set.
Valuable custom post types Duplicate utility or builder-generated URLs Custom content belongs when it has independent search value.
Useful category or taxonomy landing pages Empty or low-value tag and author archives Taxonomies are not automatically valuable or automatically worthless.

Do not remove every taxonomy archive by default. A category page can deserve inclusion when it has unique introductory content, useful organization, meaningful internal links, and a genuine search purpose. Conversely, a tag archive with little original value may be better excluded.

Author archives require the same judgment. On a multi-author publication, author pages may help users and search engines. On a single-author site, an author archive may duplicate the main blog archive closely enough that exclusion is sensible.

How do you control which content types appear?

Yoast connects sitemap eligibility to search-appearance settings. For a broad content-type decision:

  1. Go to Yoast SEO → Settings.
  2. Open the relevant content-type section.
  3. Find Show [content type] in search results?
  4. Turn the setting on when the content type should be indexable.
  5. Turn the setting off when the entire content type should be excluded.
  6. Save the changes.

Yoast documents this relationship in its sitemap-index customization guide: removing a post type from search results also removes it from the sitemap, while making the type eligible for search can place it in the sitemap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For individual URLs, use the appropriate indexing control rather than trying to edit generated XML. A page-level noindex directive is appropriate when a particular page should remain accessible but should not be indexed. A sitemap exclusion reduces discovery recommendations. A robots.txt disallow restricts crawling and may prevent Google from seeing a page’s noindex. A canonical tag identifies the preferred version among duplicates. These controls are related, but they are not interchangeable.

How do Yoast sitemaps compare with WordPress core sitemaps?

WordPress has generated its own core XML sitemap since WordPress 5.5, normally at /wp-sitemap.xml. Installing Yoast does not automatically prove that Yoast is the only sitemap generator; a site may expose both the WordPress core and Yoast systems.

System Common URL Best fit Important consideration
Yoast SEO free /sitemap_index.xml Sites already using Yoast’s indexing and search-appearance controls Provides managed sitemap behavior without requiring Premium.
WordPress core /wp-sitemap.xml Small sites with simple content structures and few SEO-plugin requirements Built into WordPress from version 5.5.
Another SEO plugin Plugin-dependent Sites committed to that plugin’s broader SEO system Do not let multiple plugins independently manage the same SEO functions.
Custom or frontend-generated sitemap Architecture-dependent Headless, highly customized, or non-standard sites The URLs must match the public indexable frontend.

Yoast describes its sitemap system as more sophisticated than WordPress’s default, but that is a vendor positioning statement rather than an independent universal measurement. For many small sites, core sitemaps may be enough. Yoast is a reasonable fit when editors already use Yoast’s content-type controls or when the site needs its integrations and documented customization points.

Test the common URLs before choosing which one to submit:

/sitemap_index.xml
/wp-sitemap.xml
/sitemap.xml

Inspect each file, response header, URL structure, and generator. Yoast notes that /sitemap.xml may belong to another plugin or to WordPress core rather than Yoast. The existence of multiple accessible sitemap URLs is not automatically harmful, but conflicting, stale, or low-quality URL sets create unnecessary management problems.

How do you submit a Yoast sitemap to Google?

Submit the sitemap index, not every child sitemap, through the verified Google Search Console property:

  1. Verify ownership of the correct domain or URL-prefix property.
  2. Open Sitemaps in Google Search Console.
  3. Enter sitemap_index.xml as the sitemap path when the property already represents the correct domain.
  4. Select Submit.
  5. Review the reported status and open the sitemap report for discovered URLs and errors.
  6. Use URL Inspection separately for a small number of important pages.

Google’s sitemap submission guidance also supports declaring the sitemap in robots.txt:

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

Use the absolute HTTPS URL, and make sure the sitemap is not blocked by a Disallow rule. A Search Console submission initiates processing; it is not a request for immediate indexing. A “Success” or “Submitted” state means Google processed the sitemap, not that every listed URL is indexed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Bing visibility matters, submit the same authoritative sitemap index to Bing Webmaster Tools as well. Search engines can process and report sitemaps differently, so do not assume that a Google status exactly predicts Bing behavior.

What are the sitemap size limits?

According to Google’s large-sitemap documentation, one sitemap may contain a maximum of 50,000 URLs and may not exceed 50 MB uncompressed. Sites exceeding those limits must split the URL set and use a sitemap index.

Yoast commonly advertises child sitemaps containing up to 1,000 URLs. The 1,000-URL grouping is Yoast’s implementation choice, not Google’s maximum. Smaller files can be easier to cache, inspect, and troubleshoot, but they create more child-sitemap requests on large sites.

Limit or setting Value Meaning
Google maximum URLs per sitemap 50,000 Upper limit for one sitemap file.
Google maximum uncompressed size 50 MB Upper limit before compression is considered.
Yoast’s commonly advertised grouping 1,000 URLs Default segmentation choice, not a Google requirement.
Documented Yoast filter example 100 entries A developer can request smaller generated sitemap pages.

To change the maximum entries per generated Yoast sitemap page, use a documented filter in a site-specific plugin or a carefully managed theme integration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
add_filter( 'wpseo_sitemap_entries_per_page', function () {
    return 100;
} );

Smaller files may help when a site has timeouts or difficult debugging, but the change increases the number of files and crawler requests. Test the effect on staging and review the setting after Yoast or WordPress updates.

How do image, video, news, and product sitemaps work?

Specialized sitemap features are useful only when the site actually publishes media or content that benefits from the additional metadata. A specialized sitemap does not guarantee visibility in image search, video results, Google News, or product search.

Images

Yoast can include image information associated with page and post URLs. Image data is not necessarily delivered as a separate standalone image sitemap; it can be embedded in the URL entries. Yoast documents image behavior and filters such as wpseo_xml_sitemap_img, wpseo_xml_sitemap_img_src, and wpseo_sitemap_urlimages in its image sitemap guidance.

Developers may use those filters to remove image data, correct an image URL supplied through a CDN, or add images that a page builder or custom module does not expose correctly. Adding an image to a sitemap does not guarantee image-search visibility.

Video

Yoast’s Video SEO extension can add a dedicated video sitemap, shown in the Yoast specification as /video-sitemap.xml. The feature is relevant to pages containing videos and requires the applicable Yoast extension.

News

Yoast’s News SEO extension can add a news sitemap. Yoast’s developer specification states that news sitemaps reference articles published or modified within the previous 48 hours. A news sitemap does not substitute for meeting Google News eligibility requirements or content policies.

Products

Yoast offers product-focused SEO functionality through its WooCommerce-related products. Product sitemap handling matters most to stores with many indexable products, product images, variants, and carefully managed product indexing rules. A store that only needs a basic sitemap does not automatically need a paid WooCommerce extension.

How can developers customize a Yoast sitemap?

The safest customization method is to change search-appearance settings, indexing directives, or documented Yoast filters rather than editing generated XML. Generated files can be rebuilt and overwrite manual changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, the documented image filter can disable image information:

add_filter( 'wpseo_xml_sitemap_img', '__return_false' );

Use Yoast’s documented sitemap APIs and filters when adding, modifying, or integrating external sitemap sources. This is especially relevant for custom post types, CDN image URLs, headless WordPress, and systems that maintain a separate frontend sitemap.

Every custom filter should be tested after plugin updates. A filter that removes all entries, alters URL hosts, or changes XML output can create an apparently valid but operationally incorrect sitemap.

What changes for images, multilingual sites, multisite, and headless WordPress?

Non-standard architectures need an additional ownership check: the sitemap must describe the URLs that users and search engines can actually access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Multilingual WordPress: confirm that sitemap URLs use the correct language paths or domains and that canonical and alternate-language annotations agree.
  • Multisite and subdirectory installations: check rewrite rules, mapped domains, and the site path. Yoast documents special considerations for NGINX, subfolders, and multisite configurations in its NGINX and sitemap guidance.
  • CDNs: ensure image URLs and sitemap responses are not rewritten to an inaccessible or non-canonical host.
  • Headless WordPress: a WordPress-generated sitemap may list backend WordPress URLs even when the public site is rendered by a separate frontend. The frontend may need to generate its own sitemap, or the developer may need to add an external sitemap to Yoast’s index.
  • Domain migrations: inspect every <loc> value for old HTTP, staging, www, or temporary-domain URLs.

In a headless setup, do not submit both backend and frontend sitemap systems simply because both respond successfully. Choose a coherent primary source whose URLs match the public, canonical, indexable site.

How do you troubleshoot Yoast sitemap problems?

Start with the symptom, then trace the response, ownership, URL set, and indexing signals in that order.

Symptom Likely causes First checks Recovery
404 Not Found Wrong URL, inactive feature, rewrite problem Yoast setting, direct URL, permalink configuration Enable the feature, resave permalinks, and check rewrite rules.
403 or 429 WAF, CDN, security plugin, rate limiting curl -I, server logs, anonymous browser request Allow legitimate crawler access and remove the block affecting sitemap paths.
500 or other 5xx PHP, database, timeout, or plugin failure Web-server and WordPress error logs Fix the underlying server or plugin error before resubmitting.
Blank child sitemap No eligible URLs, filters, cache, incompatible custom post type Content visibility, search appearance, filters, live cache Confirm whether emptiness is legitimate, then correct settings or code.
Stale URLs Page cache, object cache, CDN cache, physical XML file Compare live content with the sitemap and inspect file ownership Purge relevant caches and remove obsolete physical overrides.
Multiple sitemap systems Yoast, WordPress core, another SEO plugin, or static files Test /sitemap_index.xml, /wp-sitemap.xml, and /sitemap.xml Choose one primary system and update robots.txt and Search Console.
Wrong hostname or protocol Migration, site URL, CDN, multilingual configuration Inspect <loc> values and canonical tags Correct the source configuration rather than editing generated XML.
“Couldn’t fetch” in Search Console DNS, TLS, WAF, robots.txt, invalid XML, child URL errors Anonymous fetch, headers, logs, XML validation, child links Fix access or syntax, purge only relevant caches, then resubmit.

Why is the sitemap empty?

An empty child sitemap can be legitimate when the content type has no public eligible content, every item is noindex, the type is private or not publicly queryable, or a filter removes all entries. Other causes include incompatible custom-post-type registration and a stale or malformed cache response.

Check the content type’s search-appearance setting, individual robots directives, public status, custom filters, and caching layers. Do not add low-value URLs merely to make an empty sitemap look populated.

Why is the sitemap not updating?

Stale sitemap output most often requires investigation of page caching, object caching, CDN or reverse-proxy caching, rewrite issues, plugin conflicts, incorrect HTTPS or site-URL settings, and physical XML files that override dynamic generation. Yoast’s sitemap error documentation covers stale, blank, XSL, and common XML problems.

What should you do when a sitemap contains noindex or blocked URLs?

First inspect the live URL’s meta robots tag, HTTP headers, canonical tag, response status, and robots.txt rules. If the URL should be indexed, remove the crawl block, make the page publicly reachable with a 200 response, align the canonical URL, and clear stale caches. If the URL should not be indexed, remove it from the sitemap and retain the appropriate exclusion or indexing control.

A sitemap entry combined with a robots.txt block sends conflicting signals: Google may be unable to retrieve the page and verify its status. Do not blindly remove noindex just to increase the sitemap’s URL count.

Is Yoast Premium necessary for XML sitemaps?

Yoast Premium is not necessary for a normal XML sitemap. Yoast’s free plugin includes automatic XML sitemaps and core indexing controls, and WordPress core also provides a basic sitemap system without an additional purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Need Most proportionate choice Why
Basic posts, pages, and sitemap submission WordPress core or free Yoast A paid plan is not required for ordinary sitemap generation.
Unified Yoast controls plus redirects, internal-link workflows, support, or broader extensions Evaluate Yoast Premium The value comes from the wider workflow and bundled tools, not basic sitemap creation.
WooCommerce-specific SEO within the Yoast ecosystem Evaluate the relevant WooCommerce offering Useful only when product SEO features justify the additional bundle.
Lower-cost multi-site SEO coverage Compare SEOPress PRO SEOPress publishes free and paid tiers with multi-site options, but packaging can change.
Headless or unusual URL architecture Custom frontend sitemap or developer support The key requirement is accurate public frontend URLs, not a particular plugin brand.

Yoast Premium can be commercially sensible for publishers, agencies, and businesses that will use its workflow tools, support, Academy access, redirect automation, internal-link suggestions, AI-assisted features, or bundled Local, News, and Video SEO products. Buying Premium solely to obtain /sitemap_index.xml is difficult to justify.

SEOPress is a credible alternative for site owners comparing plugin ecosystems, especially agencies seeking published multi-site tiers or a lower listed PRO price. The comparison should focus on the complete SEO workflow, interface, support, compatibility, and maintenance—not on sitemap generation alone. Vendor pricing and feature packaging change, so verify current terms on the official SEOPress pricing page.

What is the final Yoast sitemap checklist?

  1. Enable Yoast XML sitemaps if Yoast is the intended generator.
  2. Open /sitemap_index.xml and confirm a public 200 response.
  3. Inspect child sitemaps and remove low-value content through search-appearance settings or appropriate indexing controls.
  4. Confirm listed URLs are canonical, HTTPS, reachable, and intended for indexing.
  5. Test whether /wp-sitemap.xml, /sitemap.xml, or a physical XML file represents a competing system.
  6. Keep one coherent primary sitemap configuration and update the absolute Sitemap: directive in robots.txt.
  7. Submit the sitemap index to Google Search Console and, when relevant, Bing Webmaster Tools.
  8. Inspect priority URLs separately; sitemap submission does not guarantee indexing.
  9. After migrations, plugin changes, CDN changes, or cache changes, retest headers, XML syntax, child links, and URL hosts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct Yoast SEO sitemap URL?

The usual Yoast SEO sitemap URL is https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml. The sitemap index links to child sitemaps for eligible posts, pages, taxonomies, authors, and custom post types.

Does Yoast SEO Premium create a better sitemap than free Yoast SEO?

Yoast SEO Premium is not required to create or submit a normal XML sitemap because the free Yoast plugin includes that functionality. Premium’s value is in broader workflow features and bundled extensions such as redirect automation, internal-link tools, support, and specialized SEO products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should WordPress core and Yoast both generate sitemaps?

A site can technically expose both Yoast’s /sitemap_index.xml and WordPress core’s /wp-sitemap.xml, but one coherent primary system is easier to manage. Identify which generator owns each URL and avoid submitting conflicting or stale sitemap systems.

Does a sitemap guarantee that Google will index every URL?

No. A sitemap helps Google discover URLs, but Google may ignore URLs that are blocked, redirected, non-canonical, unavailable, low quality, or otherwise unsuitable for indexing. Inspect important URLs separately in Search Console.

Is X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow on a Yoast sitemap an error?

No. Yoast normally sends X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow for the sitemap document so the XML file is not treated as a normal search result. The header does not automatically make the URLs listed inside the sitemap non-indexable.

The Bottom Line

Use Yoast’s free sitemap system when it fits the site’s existing SEO setup, submit /sitemap_index.xml, and keep the URL set deliberately small enough to represent the site’s valuable canonical pages. Check ownership, caching, robots.txt, status codes, canonicals, and competing WordPress sitemap systems before treating a Search Console error as a Yoast problem. Pay for Premium only when its broader workflow or specialized SEO features solve a real operational need.
