How to Sign in to Windows 10 with a Microsoft Account

Introduction

When you installed Windows 10 you may have created and signed in with a local account. You can sign in with a Microsoft account with the steps in this guide.

To access certain Microsoft services like Apps, Insider program, etc you need to sign in with a Microsoft account.

Steps to Sign in with a Microsoft account on Windows 10

Login to Windows 10 with your current local account.
Then right-click Start menu and click Settings.

At Windows Settings, scroll down, locate and click Accounts.

The last step will open Your Account info page. Click Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
From the image above, notice that my account name is a “Local Account”. If your account is NOT displaying as a local account then you already have a Microsoft account and DO NOT need to proceed with this step.

Wait for Microsoft Sign screen to display. If you already have a Microsoft account, enter it below. Then click Next.
A Microsoft account could be Outlook.com, Skype, Live or any other account you use to access a Microsoft service.

If the account you entered earlier is valid, you will be prompted to enter the password. Type the password. Then click Sign in.

Before you sign in with a Microsoft account, you will then be required to enter the password for your current Windows login. Type the password and click Next.

When you click next, it will take a while for the process to display the next page. Wait…

At the Create a PIN screen, click Next. Then wait for the next screen to be displayed.
When the Set up a PIN screen displays, enter a PIN. Then retype it and click OK. Then wait for the PIN to be set up.
A PIN is a simple way to login to your Windows 10 PC. It could be 4 numbers. If you wish to include letters, check the Include letter and symbols box.

When the process is completed, you will sign in with a Microsoft account automatically. See the image below. My account now displays as a Microsoft account!
