LG 65UK6090PUA: At First Glance

LG released the UK6090 series, which includes different models and sizes of 4K TVs, in 2018. However, when I wrote this review in January 2022, most of the TVs in this series have been discontinued except for the LG 65UK6090PUA.

The 65UK6090PUA is the largest television in LG’s UK6090 series. Therefore, it is the most expensive TV in the series.

Specifically, when I wrote this review in January 2022, the LG 65UK6090PUA had a price tag of $1,299. With such an expensive price tag, this television offers amazing features like a brilliant 4K display and compatibility with Alexa AI.

Even though the LG 65UK6090PUA offers these excellent features, can it provide the level of performance most people are looking for? Well, that is why this review has been written – to help you find an answer to such questions.

LG 65UK6090PUA: Design, Dimension, and Weight

When it comes to the design, the LG 65UK6090PUA is simple-looking. To give more details, this television features an all-plastic chassis with a decent black finish.

However, the TV comes with somewhat thick bezels that surround its 4K display. As expected from an LG television, there is a small “LG” logo in the center of the bottom bezel.

That said, the LG 65UK6090PUA comes with a pair of V-shaped legs. Just like the chassis of the TV, these legs are plastic and they feature a black finish.

However, the legs are placed at the extreme edges of the TV. Therefore, when using the legs, you will need to place the TV on a fairly wide table.

Alternatively, you can mount the TV on the wall thanks to the VESA 300 x 300 mm mount holes on its back. However, the back of this TV isn’t particularly thin.

Therefore, the television will stick out from the wall if wall-mounted. To make matters even worse, there is no single form of cable management feature on the back of this television.

This is so poor omission considering the TV’s expensive price tag. Talking about not-so-great design features, the LG 65UK6090PUA also has all its ports behind the TV. If you wall-mount this TV, you may struggle to access some of the ports.

So, you need to bear this in mind if you decide to stick this TV to a wall.

In terms of dimension and weight, the LG 65UK6090PUA measures 1468.1 x 88.9 x 853.4 mm and weighs 21001.3 g. To be honest, this television isn’t too heavy for a 65-inch TV.

In fact, there are various 65-inch televisions that weigh more. A few of these TVs include the Samsung UN65RU7100FXZA and Sony XBR – 65X900F, which weigh 24992g and 24500g, respectively.

In conclusion, the LG 65UK6090PUA is a decent TV that features a straightforward design. However, this TV is somewhat thick and lacks cable management features despite its expensive price tag.

As a result, I will rate the LG 65UK6090PUA an eight out of ten in this design review section.

LG 65UK6090PUA: Display Features

To begin with, the LG 65UK6090PUA boasts a 65-inch display surrounded by thick bezels, as mentioned earlier. As expected from a $1000+ television, this display features a 4K UHD screen resolution.

As a display with 4K resolution, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s 65-inch display should be able to deliver colorful and realistic content. Besides, compared to the standard HD resolution display, this TV’s display is 4x better.

However, this 65-inch display comes with a not-so-good contrast ratio of 1,096:1. This is quite surprising and disappointing due to the fact that the LG 65UK6090PUA costs so much.

Just in case you are wondering, contrast ratio is the difference/ratio between the lowest and brightest shade of a display. Moreover, a high contrast ratio is required for a display to be able to deliver or produce deep blacks.

However, since the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display features a mediocre contrast ratio, it won’t be able to produce deep blacks. Thus, movies or TV shows with plenty of shadowy or dark scenes may not be so great to watch on the LG 65UK6090PUA.

This is because blacks on the TV’s display may look grayish.

On a positive note, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display features IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology. This display technology allows a display to deliver excellent viewing angles.

Therefore, the picture quality will remain constant even when viewing this television from the sides or extreme angles. As a result, the LG 65UK6090PUA is great for a large room setting.

In addition to its IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display has 4K upscaling capabilities. You might be wondering what 4K upscaling means?

To answer that question, I’ll begin by mentioning that all LG UHD 4K TVs feature either LG Tru 4K Engine or the LG Tru 4K Engine Pro processor. The job of these picture processors is to upscale (that is, enhance or increase) lower-resolution content, like HD content, to a near 4K quality.

Therefore, when viewing HD movies, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display will enhance the picture quality of the movies to become sharper and more colorful.

However, with all these features, I have bad news for movie lovers. To give more details, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display doesn’t support local dimming.

Local dimming is a picture technique that enhances the black shade or improves the contrast ratio of a display. Technically, with the help of this technique, blacks on a display will look darker.

Therefore, improving the picture quality of the display. Sadly, despite having a poor contrast ratio, this television’s display doesn’t support local dimming.

To make things even worse, this television’s display has a relatively low maximum brightness of 311 nits. What makes me more disappointed about this TV’s display brightness is that even TVs that cost less have about 400 nits or higher maximum brightness.

An example is the Hisense 55DU6500 – its display has a maximum brightness of 734 nits.

Well, the result of the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display’s poor brightness is that the TV may not be ideal for use in a bright room.

To further verify the performance of the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display, we will now discuss the display’s response time.

Briefly, response time refers to the time that a display takes to change from one color to another. Moreover, before you can say a display has a fast response time, the display’s response time must be below 24 milliseconds.

As for the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display, it has a response time of 15 ms, which is practically fast. With such a fast response time, fast-motion content like sports or action movies will be a joy to watch on this TV.

Moving on, have you ever noticed or experienced a delay in transmission from either a gamepad or remote control? Whether the answer is yes or no, we will now be delving into the Input lag of the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display.

Input lag, also known as input latency means the delay between signal input and a display’s reaction. Moreover, a display having a low input lag is very important to gamers because it improves the gaming experience.

Basically, to enjoy gaming, a display must have a low input lag of 15 milliseconds or lower. Thankfully, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s display has an input lag of 11.8 milliseconds.

Thus, the LG 65UK6090PUA is an ideal television for gamers.

In summary, the LG 65UK6090PUA delivers impressive display performance and features. However, the TV’s display flops in some major aspects, such as the brightness and contrast ratio.

Also, the display doesn’t support local dimming features. Notwithstanding, gamers and action movie lovers will love this TV due to its low input lag and fast response time.

Thus, to end this display review section, I will be rating the LG 65UK6090PUA an eight out of ten.

LG 65UK6090PUA: Sound Features

You all will agree with me when I say everyone loves and appreciate good sound quality. No matter who you are, there’s always that sensational feeling one gets from listening to good sound.

In light of this, we’ll be discussing the sound performance, features, and properties of the LG 65UK6090PUA in this section.

The LG 65UK6090PUA is equipped with a pair of 20-watts built-in speakers. These speakers are considered good enough to deliver normal or let me say decent sound quality.

However, what makes these speakers stand out from others is that the LG 65UK6090PUA features Ultra Surround Sound technology. Basically, this sound technology allows the speakers to deliver realistic and immersive sound.

To give more details, the sound technology gives an impression of a cinema sound system. Unfortunately, due to the lack of subwoofers, the bass level of this television isn’t good at all.

As a result, bass-heavy movies or music may not be a good idea on the LG 65UK6090PUA. Notwithstanding, you can purchase an external subwoofer to get the bass you want.

On a bright note, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s speakers, with the help of the Ultra Surround Sound technology, produce clear dialogue. Therefore, you will be able to clearly hear and understand the conversation between characters in a movie.

In addition to its impressive dialogue production, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s speaker’s distortion performance is superb. To be more specific, even at the maximum volume level, the distortion that the LG 65UK6090PUA produces is low.

To top that up, distortion is totally absent when the television’s volume level is around 80% or below. For clarity, distortion in this context is the alteration of sound frequencies that a speaker produces, resulting in less pleasant sound output.

In conclusion, with the help of the Ultra Surround Sound technology, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s sound quality is adequate. However, the lack of a subwoofer which results in poor bass production is a major flaw.

All things considered, I will rate the LG 65UK6090PUA an eight out of ten in this sound feature review section.

LG 65UK6090PUA: Ports and Connectivity Features

For a television with a basic backside, the LG 65UK6090PUA has quite a number of ports. Moreover, the ports are separated into two sections on the TV’s back – some are right-facing, while some are down-facing.

There are more right-facing ports than down-facing ports. The implication of this is that users will have access to more ports easily since the right-facing ports are more accessible.

The down-facing ports include one HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a digital optical out, and composite video inputs.

The right-facing ports, however, include two HDMI ports, one of which supports ARC (audio return channel). Therefore, by using the HDMI-ARC port, you can connect a soundbar or external speaker to the TV.

Apart from the two HDMI ports, the right-facing ports also include two USB ports and an RF port. This RF port is for connecting an antenna to the television.

Moving on to wireless connectivity, the LG 65UK6090PUA features an in-built (802.11ac) WiFi for wireless internet connection. Unfortunately, this television doesn’t come with Bluetooth, which is disappointing considering its expensive price tag.

Next up in this section is the LG 65UK6090PUA’s remote control. The remote that comes with this TV is quite basic and has 46 buttons.

Furthermore, the remote has two dedicated white buttons in the middle for quick access to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Asides from the dedicated buttons, there is also a plus-shaped navigation button in the middle of this remote.

Moreover, at the top of this remote, there is a full number pad. However, this remote control doesn’t support voice input because it lacks a built-in microphone.

In conclusion, the ports that the LG 65UK6090PUA offers are adequate and functional. However, the lack of Bluetooth is something that bothers me.

Therefore, I will rate the LG 65UK6090PUA an eight out of ten in this port and connectivity review section.

LG 65UK6090PUA: Smart Features

In case you are not aware, LG has one of the best platforms or operating systems for smart TVs. To give more details, the operating system that I am talking about is LG’s very own webOS.

Therefore, the LG 65UK6090PUA, like any other LG smart TV, features this webOS. What I really love about this operating system is that it features a simple but efficient interface.

To be more specific, this OS’s interface has an application bar at the bottom which doesn’t cover much of the display. Also, this application bar is very easy to scroll through thanks to the lag-free OS.

Furthermore, the home screen of the webOS’s interface has a menu for easy access to a web browser, music, TV schedule, and user guide. A really impressive feature of this operating system is the included Channel Plus.

The Channel Plus is a free app that allows you to stream over 140+ channels which include news, sports, and movies. This is an excellent alternative for those who don’t have the capacity to subscribe to popular paid streaming apps.

Speaking of streaming apps, the LG 65UK6090PUA’s webOS offers the majority of streaming apps. These include Vudu, Netflix, HULU, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and so on.

Apart from its excellent webOS, the LG 65UK6090PUA supports voice control. However, the television or its remote control doesn’t have a built-in microphone.

Therefore, you have to buy either an Amazon Echo or Google Home speaker for voice interaction.

With all that being said, it is clear that the LG 65UK6090PUA is worthy of a nine out of ten rating in this section.
